POST Thur»., Februory IS 1992 (Se< I) Chess team settles for TVL dual-meet title by M OTT NEWTON The Pioneer chess team will have to settle for being T im b e r V alley League dual meet champions for the second year in a row Even though they had the best record at the four team T V L tournament, with 10 wins, three loses and two draws, they lost the round robin to Oregon City for the second con secutive year. Sandy junior Tim Zim merman was first board c h a m p io n , w in n in g a trophy Saturday at the meet, held at SUHS Junior Pete Watkins, se cond board champion, was the only individual to win all three games, "He played well,** Coach Roger Ford said "That's the best I ’ve seen him play. He r e a lly squashed people.” Senior Chris Botcheos was 2-1-0, and tied with two others for the fourth board title Other Sandy players in c lu d e s e n io r M ik e Niemeyer, third board, and junior Roman Scott, fifth board The Pioneers have earn ed a berth to the state meet, which will be held Feb 26 and 27 at Crescent Valley High School in Cor vallis Last year Sandy was the su rp ris e team at the 16-team state tournament, finishing sixth, the highest P io n e e r s k i te a m s d o w e l l a t w e e k e n d m e e t Robert Karsten was sur prised when the girls ski te a m b la s te d V a lle y League opponents by 25 seconds in a meet last week The girls did it again Saturday, only this time it was by 31 points Junior Anne Sarich was the top finisher ''It was nice seeing her again.*' Karsten joked Sartch has just finished a “ r e la t iv e ly successful tour,” competing for the P a c ific N orthw est Ski Association (a division of the United States Ski Association) in Nor Am competition in Colorado and Utah Karsten was also pleased with Sue Sarich, who finish ed fourth I can always depend of her to finish and finish well, Karsten said. They'd had two good prac tices, and the team's at titude seemed good “ It was one of those situations where maybe everyone wanted it too much.” Smith said. The win put Silverton in third place while dropping the Pioneers to a tie for fourth Thursday they’ll travel to Canby for a last league game, and are in a must-win situation Smith said, “ It is my con tention we will win on Thursday. He recently won the DM- SI High School Regional meet, and will compete in the 0M S I High School State meet in March Ford said that Zim m er man and Botcheos are ag gressive players, attacking players Watkins, Niemeyer and Scott, on the other hand, wait for their opponents to make a mistake, and then capitalize on it.
