Chess team settles for TVL dual-meet title

The Pioneer chess team
will have to settle for being

dual meet champions for
the second year in a row
Even though they had the
best record at the four
team T V L tournament,
with 10 wins, three loses
and two draws, they lost
the round robin to Oregon
City for the second con
secutive year.

they ran an extremely long
course for a high school

the snow, making it easier
to get an edge in, but it also
made the visibility poor

players I've ever had,"
Ford said. "They talk, they
chatter And chess is usual
ly thought of as the other
way."
But if they're energetic,
they're not uncontrollable,
Ford is quick to point out,
adding that "brightness
and competitiveness" are
what a coach looks for in
chess players

"He refers to it as a

Ford points out that
chess is an inexpensive
sport
"W e don't need much
equipment," he said, ad
ding that the sports wears
on one’s nerves more than
on his tennis shoes
Ford’s hobby is chess
And he also participates in
the “exciting, exhilarating,
fast paced sport of postal
chess.”
He has 21 games going,
with players from all over
the United States and
Canada
