2 -S A N O V (O r* ) POST Thur» Fobruory 18. 1982 (tec I) Keeping posted: Peru trip: ‘quite an experience’ by TERRY MARTIN Around this time last year San dy High School senior Kelly Spradlin# took a trip with 15 other students to Peru, through the American Field Service < AFSi. Now a year later and one year older. Spradltng is back in Sandy to describe her journey as “quite an experience ’’ During the visit she changed families three times and stayed in two cities “ My first family was really stuck up I was more a status sym bol to them and I didn't like that,** she said “ M y second fa m ily broke because I had problems with the AFS president This was while I was staying in Piura, this was really a small town “ My last family was really neat, they lived in Trujillo This was basically from October to January when I had a really good time,** said Spradling The two high schools Spradling attended were both p riv a te , Catholic a ll—girl schools. "A ll schools throughout the country have uniforms exactly alike, except each individual school has an insignia on the arms of the uniforms So, if a student is caught not in school, they know which school to call 'Also, they go to school from the end of April to January, where we go from September to June,’’ she said. Overall, Spradling felt sym pa thy for the Peruvians " I feel really sorry for the Peru vians," she said “ They really don't have a future They have eight to 12 universities in the coun- llflp * * N • t v Hi “ A month later I went back to school and everyone was angry with me." Spradling said. “ Come to find out, nobody contacted the school about my vacation, so they were ready to kick me out So I didn't return to school until Oc tober “ I also had problems with the president <of AFS) spreading rumors about me which made it hard to make friends In my first house I wasn't allowed to date, or go anywhere When everyone went out for the evening I would have to stay home with the maids, because he had told them I could not be trusted,” she said “ Out of the 15 that went, only two were satisfied with AFS They really didn't care what we did as long as we gave AFS a good name '* « Spradling feels that even with the hassles she encountered, she would be an exchange student again Kelly Spradling try, and out of the thousands that apply for acceptance, well maybe only 150 will be accepted "They just don't have any op portunities The Peruvian people are really nice and friendly. The young people are really im mature, I mean really immature Going to high school there was like being back in junior high.” During her tim e in Peru, Spradling encountered problems that she didn't expect, “Lots of kids had problems The AFS committee caused problems for many students In August I took a vacation to the mountains I cleared it with AFS They said, fine, they would contact the school and tell them where I was, etc " I really learned patience from this experience, an extrem e amount of patience I also grew up a lot in this past year, probably more than I would have in five years Mainly because I found the only one I could depend on was myself I feel good about the trip, but bad about AFS," she said Spradling plans to apply for an exchange program that will take her to New Zealand this summer If she doesn't go this trip she will apply for a college exchange to Europe She has already been accepted to Oregon State Univer sity's School of Engineering and will apply for the exchange her sophomore year of college Optimists start membership drive stallation for Diane Taylor, worthy ad visor-elect, and her officers at the Masonic Temple in Sandy at 2:30 pm A reception w ill follow THURSDAY.
