D an M a r t in , Chuck Kearney, Calvin McKinnis, Randy Carmony and Tim Systma all won individual title s at the C a rd in a l Classic in Tacoma, Wash., this weekend The varsity handily won the team title, as did the se- cond varsity The Pioneers also won the trophy for most falls, and junior Chuck Kearney, a 168 pounder, was voted the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler by the coaches The tournament, which is billed as "T he largest single one-day wrestling tournament in the state of W ashington," provided some tough competition, according to Coach Ron Calhoun. Kearney's weight class was especially tough The fifth-place seed had par ticipated in last year's Washington state touma • ment Calhoun said that it was pretty much assumed that whoever won the 168 pound weight division would win the Outstanding Wrestler award. Kearney won by fall the first two rounds, and then won 4 2 in the finals Calhoun said that he dominated the last match, but had a hard tim e because hla shoulder and arm were taped too tightly He said that the match was not as close as the score indicates Martin, a 157 pounder, also had no trouble winning the first two rounds He pinned Terry Choate of Elma in the finals Calhoun said that a coach from Franklin Pierce told him th a t C h o ate is "awesome,” and had drop ped down fro m the ITS pound weight class Calhoun said that Choate made Martin look like a dwarf, but added, "Aa you can see, Dan had no respect for his opponent's slie,” Cal McKinnis, a 17« pounder won by a fall, and then won two one point ■tensions McKinnis, Randy Car mony and .Scott Skipper are the team t moat improved w re s tle rs this season. Kearney Skipper and Carm ony a re bunched together in three weight Skipper won the serond va rs ity individual title Saturday, and so far this season has won every match by fall. Senior heavyweight Tim Systma won by forfeit first round, won by fall second round, and won 5-0 in the finals The wrestler that took third in the heavyweight division was sixth in last year's Washington state to u r n a m e n t, and the wrestler that beat him, Ken Young of Franklin Pierce, then lost to Systma So, Calhoun was pleased to have Systma win against tough opponents Calhoun was also pleased w ith ju n io r 98 pounder John Cox, who won two overtime matches on his way to a third place finish. Junior IJirry Topliff, a 106 pounder, won by fall first round, won 14 3 second round, and lost 53 in the finals to Mark Peterson of Franklin Pierce, a Washm* ton s ta te to u rn a m e n t runner up last year in the 98-pound weight division "Randy Swanson at 115 was a real su rp ris e," Calhoun said He stepped in for Dave Kenison, who was ill. and lost first round 6 1 to the eventual champion He was then victorious in three matches in the consolation bracket to "quite handily win third place " He won 7-2 in the match for third H ill M athews, a 123 pounder, lost first round to the eventual champion, won second round, but lost 741 in a match for third place Even though junior Mike Rohweder Jumped up three w eight claaaea to the IKhpound division, he still hasn't lost his winning way, He won by fall first round, won 6-5 in the semifinals, and then fell 16 4 in the finals to Mike Valdiver of Ttmherline, who won his second Cardinal Classic ti tie Although the score was 16-4, It was an exciting match to watch, Calhoun said F re s h m a n H ren t Kearney and junior Mo Contreras finished sixth in ihe tournament C o n tre ra s lost f ir s t round won 114, and then withdrew from the tourrta ment because of rib pro blems Doug Z io lk o w a k l, a senior 146 pounder lost first round, won second round, lost third round, and won his final match by a fall for fifth place Second varsity finishes include Brad Emerson, 88 lb 2nd. It's ju s t th a t he's a freshman, and makes some freshman mistakes "He hangs in there and does a good job each tim e," Calhoun said " I have a feeling he's going to get better and better and bet ter, because he does things right, lose or win That's what is really critical " Calhoun said that Martin probably wrestled his best match to date It was mostly takedown practice for Martin, who won 21-4 " I feel that if nothing's happening on the ground, you might as well let him go and get after him on his feet, because we want things to happen." Calhoun said Chuck Kearney is the same w ay, he added Kearney pinned hia West Linn opponent one minute and 20 seconds after the match had tiegun They were wrestling up, hut Kearney took his oppo nent to the mat with a crow d p le a s in g a n k le sweep, and pinned him seconds later " It was awful smooth," Calhoun said about the ankle sweep "The guy starts worrying about hia head and shoulders and the next thing he knows his feet are gone out from under him ," Calhoun said "There are two or three things that he just does aa w e ll as an y c o lle g e wrestler I've seen He a very, very refined ” Cal McKinnis, wrestling up a weight class in the 176 pound division, also won by a fall in the first period Calhoun praised McKin ms for his aggressive style Carmony also won. but with a style nearly the op poaite of McKinnis's "He's more regimented, systematic " Calhoun said Handy plans shea w h a t« going to happen Calvin just lets it happen and makes sure it happens in his favor "Both are successful m their own way I guess that's the nice thing about wrestling. You can do it your own way sometimes “Like Tim Systma at heavyweight, he has a bold, I guess you’d say, that he himself has developed, and it's his baby. " I showed him the basic theory behind this leg situation, and he's taken it over from there on his own, and he's made his own hold, I'v e never seen anybody do it but him. and he's good at it He does it to everybody " Calhoun was also pleased with Swanson's perfomr- m ance T hu rsday.
