He contributed 13 points, three steals and five assists "They worked real well together tonight," Brisbin said after the game, referring to the way they ran the fast break Brisbin, who used the entire bench, was also pleased with two other players that didn’t start, junior Mike Lund and senior Ran dy Martin About Lund, he said, "He did some things that probably weren’t noticed by a lot of people. But he got himself in good defensive posi tion. He made some good passes." The quick passes helped get the offense moving, Brisbin said. "Randy Martin did a good job when he went in, hustling, and helping us maintain what we'd picked up at that point. "Some of our starters tonight had a sub-par game, and these kids went in and picked it up and did a good jo b . And t h a t ’s re a l valuable." The Pioneers were outrebounded 41-38, but had 22 steals, compared to five for Spectrum Gordon Klootwyk, a 6-8 senior, grabbed a number of rebounds for Spectrum in the first half. The next game for Sandy will be Jan. 5. Boys take first in every event in dual against Oregon City The boys swim team took first place in every event in a dual with Oregon City last week, winning 96-45 "They rose to the occasion," said Coach Mark Smith, obviously pleas ed about the 10 first-place finishes. Juniors Mark Gunderson, Steve Clark and Darrin Britton, as well as freshman Brian Stamm, have shown considerable improvement, Smith said. The win gave the Pioneer boys a 2-0 record, and the girls matched it with an 84-71 win of their own. Smith was especially pleased with Heidi Lamer, who edged Laura Watt in the 100 breast, only to be dis qualified for an illegal turn, a judg ment call. " I would give Heidi much credit for the determination she put forth," Smith said. Had she not been disqualified, Lamer would have turned in personal records in each of the three events in which she competed. Smith was also pleased with the Pioneers’ sweep in the 100 free. Senior Bonita Connelly took first, junior Donna Nelson second and sophomore Dawn M iller third. Junior Lisa Izer, sophomore Bren da DuBois and freshman Julie Dasher were also credited with per forming well. DuBois brought down her time in the 100 back from 1:32.8, against Can- SUHS girls could even record at 3-3 with a win Monday over Centennial A fter a lopsided run-in with Jackson (a 69-26 loss), Coach John Smith is hoping the Pioneer girls will get back on their feet against Centen nial. They’ll play that game at Centen nial at 7:30 p.m Monday. " I think it's real important to have a win under your belt and a solid 500 record going into league, so this is an important game," said Smith, whose girls are 2-3. He expects the match up between 6-foot senior Dawn New and Centen nial’s Rachel Sudel, 6-foot senior, to be a good one Smith said that he thinks SUHS has the faster club, and that they'll try to move the ball quickly and play pressure defense to take advantage of that fact "W e'll try to re-establish those things that helped us play well in our first four games." Smith said. On Jan 5 the Pioneers will host McMinnville. The McMinnville boys finished third at state last year, and fell to perennial power David Douglas 89-83 earlier this season The McMinnville girls finished 16th in the state tournament last year, and beat David Douglas 84-78. McMinnville used to be in the Coast Valley League with Sandy, and the Pioneers have only suffered one loss to them The boys fell 81-75 in 1979, the last time the two teams met. Both teams' lineups are tentative at this time. The Pioneers will host Redmond on Jan. 7, and Gresham on Jan. 14. Smith said that he is pleased to have a number of swimmers already qualified for the district meet "We've got a lot of versatility this year," he said Earlier in the season he pointed out that this could be a key factor in determining the league championship, especially with the girls "The team continues to have an outstanding attitude," Smith said 4«) Free Relay N DuBois, Nelson.
