Despite the new league, the Gophers gave no in dica tion at
the beginning of the 1970 cam paign that they would be one of
the top foo tb all clubs in the school’s histo ry

turned out to be; nine s tra ig h t victories, a W ilco League
cham pionship and only 39 points scored against them d u rin g
the re g u la r season
" I t was a group of kids that believed in each other, that lo v ­
ed to play together, Nice says. "T h e y were very easy to
coach and they were alw ays ready to play Sometimes d u rin g
p ra ctice we had to tune them down a little bit They'd get a
little ca rrie d a w a y ."
In 1970, G resham had an offense b u ilt around quarterback
Chuck W ills, running backs Dave Monnes. Bon Lunan and
Joe C lingm an and a line that included center V icto r B u rn
and guard M ike Popovich B u rn , Popovich and C lingm an
would a ll be W ilco League a ll stars when the season ended
But it was defense that the Gophers lived or died on "O ne
of the reasons we were able to compete well against the
la rg e r M etro schools was that we concentrated a lot on
defense and our kicking g a m e ," Nice says. "O u r defense was
alw ays as strong as everyone else’s "
G resham opened W ilco League play on Sept. 11. 1970, in

The Gophers ended discussions, however, by knocking o ff
