Sandy E le m en ta ry School D is tric t The county wants the d is tric t to obtain <i p e rm it and a variance for the sign Back-to-School Over Kelso School sign D istrict charged w ith violations by l > \ \ IM II.O N Some tim es good inten tions just don't seem to pay off. .is Sandy E le m en ta ry School D is tric t Superinten dent ( ’la rk Lund discovered recently The P arents’ Club of Kelso S cho ol c o n s tru c te d and erected a sign at the school d u r in g th e s p r in g , unbeknownst to Lund, and now Clackam as County of fic ia ls have notified him that th<* sign is in vio latio n of county ordinances No building p e rm it was issued fo r the sign and its s u r f a c e s u rp a s s e s th e allow able square footage The superintendent has a t tem pted to re c tify the situa tion But a fte r three trip s to ( »regon ( ’ity to straighten the m a tte r out, Lund s till has not obtained the necessary per m it He received the in itia l let te r of notice of vio latio n in e a rly Ju ly It instructed him to secure a p e rm it He appeared at the county Planning D epartm ent July 28 The ap plicatio n was not p ro c e s s e d , h o w e v e r, because Lund was then in s tru tte d to produce two sets of a rc h ite c tu ra l dra w in gs and specifications and one site plan showing the sign's locution on school property, even though that had been provided when the school was bu ilt Not h a v in g th e s e m aterials, Lund returned to his office, telephoned the a r c h ite c tu r a l firm , Broome. O ’Toole, Rudolf & Associates of Portland, and requested the needed m a te ria ls By Tuesday, the s ch o o l d i s t r ic t ha d not received the m aterials Ju ly 31, the school d is tric t S a n d y m a n c ite d fo llo w in g A Sandy m an was cited and released e a rly Tuesday m orn ing follow ing a tw o car accident in downtown Sandy Steven H Koons was cited fo r d riv in g under the in fluence of intoxicants and bit and run d riv in g a fte r the ca r he was d riv in g collided w ith a 1975 F ord M ustang drive n by A lice M c A llis te r of Sandy at 12:25 a m The accident occu rred on M em ig Avenue, near P ro c to r Boulevard A Hood R iver m an was ja ile d S a tu rd a y e v e n in g fo llow ing a disturbance at a Sandy residence W illia m C a rl B aum eister of Hood R iv e r was a rre s te d and charged w ith fourth-degree assault a fte r a dispute w ith received a second le tte r of “ violation n o tic e " w ith an order for action in 10 days Tuesday, Lund again went to the Planning D epartm ent, prepared to secure a p e rm it, only to be told that the sign was too large i t ’s 3 9 feet by 7 (ee, and the county allow s IK s q u a r e fe e t a n d a variance would l>e needed "If it's any sm aller, it's not going to be readable from the county ro a d ."
