Thur» June lg 1981 (Sec I) SANDY (O re ) POST inside business C o m p e n sa tio n b en efits u p Workers injured prior to July 1 of this year, and receiving tune loss benefits, will soon have increased w o rk e rs ' c o m p en satio n benefits The new benefits, effective July 1, will amount to a 9 8 percent increase, according to Hoy Green, director of the Oregon Workers’ Compensa tion Department "Injured workers' max imum benefits in this state are provided by law and governed by the Oregon average weekly w ag e," Green said "The Employ- ment Division of the Depart ment of Human Resources advises (that > the new average weekly wage for Oregon is $286 88 This figure becomes the m axim um weekly lim it used for the ca lcu latio n of tim e-loss benefits by workers’ com pensation insurers ” Green added that benefits will also increase for most permanently and totally d isa b le d w o rk e rs and spouses of fatally injured workers Those workers and spouses who received in creases last Julv w ill receive an 18 7 percent increase in their August benefit check. The c le v e r m ind of 13-year-old Marty Fadness of B o rin g cre a te d a mechanical device which a Minnesota construction com pany plans to patent. Rights to Marty's inven tion were turned over to the large corporation And since the processing of the patent is taking place, details must remain confidential until everything is signed, sealed and delivered It all began when M arty’s father, Quinton Fadness, was in Minnesota on a business trip He talked to a corporate official about his son's creation, which he made from Legos. At the time, the firm was con fronted with a mechanical problem which could be solv ed by M arty’s concept, ac cording to Fadness "M a rty ’s device displays a unique q ua lity," Fadness said, adding that the com pany should benefit from the invention. The company plans to make a working model from the toy for study Marty Fadness has long been fa s c in a te d by mechanics. For several years he pieced together cars, trucks, tanks, trailers and tractors, using Lego toys collected from friends and family as gifts. When asked how much time he devotes to his crea tions, he turned to his mother and asked, "How many times have you asked me to do something when I was working on my Legos9" The tim e was co n siderable. M arty’s fascination with mechanical things began as a young boy.
