F o rm e r m a jo r league p la y e rs dot the P o rtlan d ro ste r and adm ission price for bleach er se ats is a scant $1.50. Those kind of prices a re hard to beat. The problem , you see, is atten d an ce. Both the P o rtla n d T im bers of the North A m erican Soccer League and the P o rtlan d B eavers of the P acific Coast L eague in baseball have exciting, contending team s. But no one will w atch them P e rh ap s the T im b e rs’ prom otional efforts have been m isd irected . Unlike soccer, though, rain forces baseball g am es to be postponed. The u n certain ty of w hether or not th ere will be a g a m e m ay be enough to dissuade som e fans from attending, or even inquiring about the gam e. But it could be a big price. The T im bers, owned by Ixiuisiana Pacific, have not hidden the fact that they a re d istressed by the lack of support from P ortland fans. And the players them selves have said that they like the city, but c a n ’t expect the com pany to keep backing a fran ch ise that is co n stantly in the red. The w eath er has been the biggest factor. F a n s seem ed tu rn ed off by the rain, even though general adm ission se ats, and som e reserv ed , a re covered and protected from the elem ents. P o rtlan d is a big enough city to support the T rail B lazers of the NBA. T ickets to B lazer g am es a re a r a re com m odity. The sport doesn’t conflict with e ith e r so ccer or baseball gam es, so w here a re all the fans in the su m m er? Both the B eavers and T im bers have a chance to m ake the playoffs in th eir re sp e c tive sports. Surely that will draw a few fans, but it will be too little, too late. It m ay tak e a full season of support to keep e ith e r or both tea m s in P ortland. T ickets a re not that expensive and Civic S ta d iu m ’s p a rtia lly covered sta n d s a re enough to protect the frag ile skins of P o rtla n d 's fair w eath er followers.
