POST 9 The Post Sports 10 qualify for state and Recreation * '< I Young Pioneer team makes strong showing at district by MARK H <>\ I) It was more or less a building year for the Sandy High track team’ and Pioneer coach Randy Hutchinson was rather pleased with his team's performance at the Timber Valley league district meet Sandy was third in the girls com petition and fourth in the boys We competed really w ell," he said "We had no one in the sprints or hurdles and the girls were just out of second place The kids just pulled together And our boys competed ex tremely well They were fourth and not far out of third with a really young team ” The Pioneers qualified seven in dividuals for the state meet as well as a relay team Stephanie Hagstrom will throw the javelin, Paige Daugherty will toss the shot and javelin, Gayle Both will run the 800 meters and the 300 intermediate hurdles, Donna Nelson will run the 3,000 meters, Sandra I eterson, Sharon Jensen, Darby Binder and Both will run the mile relay. Scott Skipper will toss the javelin. Ixjcke Christman will com pete in the discus and Sam Bomey w ill run the 1,500 meters The sore-armed Skipper came from behind to win the javelin with a new district record of 193-5. He also placed fourth in the shot put with a 47 2 toss Christman was second m the discus, 133-11, just ahead of team mate Mike Marleau who missed a trip to state Marleau was third at 132-6. Bomey, who may be as good as any freshman distance runner in Sandy history, shattered his per sonal best in the 1,500 meters by kicking in to a 4:11.0, good for se cond place. He edged Sheldon Stewart of Sweet Home for second and the state trip in the race, where he knocked seven seconds off his previous best Bomey was also sixth in the 800 meters with a 2:06.1 time Bob Nippert placed fourth in the high jump for Sandy with a personal best jump of 6 2 He also set a PB in the triple jump at 40-11. but finished just out of the money Sandy's mile relay team finished fourth in 3 41 2 Daugherty was the leading point producer for Sandy The sophomore won the shot put, 37-0, was second in the javelin, 112 7, and third in the discus, 108-7 Hagstrom was the win ner in the javelin, 141-7, and took third in the shot, 33-2, and fourth in the discus. 105-11 Both took second place to Canby 's explosive Teresa Katterheinrich in the Koo meters Katterheinrich turn ed in one of the state's better times, winning in 2 14 9, while Both was se cond in 2 17 4 Both marks bettered Roth’s district record set last year Both was also second in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a school record time of 47 2, and fifth in the high jump at 5 0 Shelby Dries was fourth for Sandy in the 800 with a personal best of 2:25 2 Nelson won a trip to state by finishing second in the 3,ooo meters The Sandy sophomore staged an am a zin g re c o v e ry fro m an automobile accident three weeks ago and worked herself back into shape in a matter of days She didn't have enough to beat West Linn's Kathy Nichols, first in 10:45 5, but Nelson s 10:57.2 was a school record Sophomore Laura Strmgham finished fourth for Sandy in the 1,500 meters w ith a respectable 4 59.7. but missed by two places a state berth < >ne of the meet's big surprises was the Sandy mile relay team Peg ged no better than th ird ’ the Pioneer quartet came through in the clutch to clip nine seconds off its previous best and win in a time of 4:06 1 ’ 4.05 0 converted to metric». Sandy dominated the throwing events, as Stephanie Hagstrom claimed a win in the ja ie lin with a throw of 111-7. Pioneer junior Itoh Nippert had a good meet, despite missing here at 6.3 in the high jum p Nippert cleared 6-2 for a personal best and fifth place. Sandy fourth. 46. Silverton fifth. 39. Canby sixth, 38; Sweet Home seventh. 29. and Molalla eighth. 22 West Linn was the league's dual meet champion for girls, but the Lions were slight underdogs at district because of Oregon City’s depth West Linn came through in the clutch, however, and Oregon Ci ty saw valuable points slip away in key events West Linn was first with 102. Oregon City second. 95. Sandy third, 89 Silverton fourth. .56. Estacada and Sweet Home tied for fifth. 38. Molalla seventh. 33; and Canby e ig h th ,14 Oregon City's boys were led by Dan Doherty, who won the long jump, triple jump and placed third in the high jump. Bret Wilson, a win ner in the 100 and 200 meters, and a host of other performers Rich Gaiser set a meet record in the discus with a I6O 0 throw . Tom Beard did likewise in the pole vault with a 12 9 effort. Doherty's 21 2*j long jump and 44-0', triple jump were meet records. Scott Fish had a meet record in the high hurdles with a blazing 14.7 time, and Scott Isaac won the 3.000 meters handilv in 9 01 2 Oregon City also won both relays West Linn was never in the title chase, but claimed the runnerup position with relative tase Terry Schmeiser set a new mark in the w • N shot with a 50-4 put and the Lions got a win from Jeff Tressler in the 400 with a 50 3 time, also a new meet record. Molalla finished in dead last, hut the Indians' Carl Ebeling set a meet record in the high jump, winning at 6-6 Sandy's Scott Skipper easily eclipsed the TVL javelin mark, win mng with a 193 5 toss A new record also went to Mark Boswell of Estacada, winner of the 1.500 meters in 4 (M 9 Wes, Linn used its sprinting and jumping power to ease pas, Oregon City in the girls competition.
