Sandy fin ish e d a re sp e cta b le th ir d in the g irls and fo u rth in the hoys. But insiders w ill te ll you that Sandy was one a th le te aw ay fro m ta k in g it a ll. The Pioneers got blanked in a ll the events w hich re q u ire s p rin tin g o f any k in d T hey got no points at a ll in the 100, 200, 400 o r high hurdles. Sandy was also shut out in the tr ip le ju m p , long ju m p , pole v a u lt, boys in te rm e d ia te h u rdles and short relays. T hat s ta tis tic is s ta g g e rin g . One s p rin te r, w ith a th ird place fin is h in the 100, 200 and short re la y w ould have lifte d Sandy to the g irls title . The Pioneers have se ve ra l p ro spects, hut they a re a ll freshm en and sophom ore s w ho h a v e n ’ t had tim e to develop What the d is tric t m eet should do is serve as a w a rn in g to the rest o f the league. Sandy could v e ry w e ll go on to w in both the boys and g irls d is tric t title s next ye a r. T h a t m a y be going out on a lim b , but then again, look at a n o th e r fa ct. S andy’s g irls , w ith «9 points, w ere th ird in the league behind West Lin n (102) and Oregon C ity (95). O f the P io n e e rs’ to ta l, BH w ere scored by u n d ergra duates. The o n ly senior to score was Kenee Hess, w ith a s ix th place fin is h in the 3,000 m eters. The P ioneers do m in a te d the th ro w in g events w ith sophom ore Paige D a u g h e rty and ju n io r Stephanie H a g s tro m . G a yle R oth, Donna Nelson, Sharon Jensen and L a u ra S tr- ingham a re solid fro m 4(H) to 3,000 m eters. A g ro u p ol young s p rin te rs could develop by next season and Roth and Jensen lead a n o th e r solid g ro u p in the ju m p s. W ith ju s t one point m issin g , the P ioneers should be looking fo rw a rd to next y e a r w ith glee. And so should the P ioneer boys. Sandy placed fo u rth w ith 46 points behind O regon C ity , 166; West L in n , 112; and E stacada, 74. A ll of Sandy's points w ere scored by u n d e rg ra d u a te s and the Pioneers w ere m is s in g Steve M e te la k , a ju n io r who s u ffe re d an in ju r y just before d is tric t. He had the T V L ’s second fastest tim e in the 800 m eters at the tim e . Scott S k ip p e r has p o te n tia l to w in a ll o f the th ro w in g events next y e a r, if he can get past his own te a m m a te s. D ale R asm ussen, Locke C h ris tm a n , M ik e M a rle a u and R ic h a rd D o e r ing a re a ll am ong the le a g u e ’s best a lre a d y in the th re e events and w ill do even b e tte r next year F re s h m a n R yan ( ’oom bs m ade the fin a ls in the 1(H) m e te rs at d is tr ic t, the firs t Sandy frosh in y e a rs to do so. He could be the s p rin te r the Pioneers need. Bob N ip p e rt should score points in the ju m p s , fre sh m a n Sam R om ey is d e m o lis h in g the SUHS frosh re co rd book and M etelak w ill be back. If a ll this sounds a bit o p tim is tic , it should. The Pioneers have w hat m a y be th e ir deepest freshm en class e ve r and th e ir g ro u p of sophom ores is s m a ll, but oozing w ith talent . N ext y e a r ’s team w ill also be young, but w ith the added season of experience , San dy w ill be tough to beat. The P ioneers fa re d w e ll at d is tr ic t, but if e ver a season ended w ith o p tim is m fo r next y e a r, th is w as it.
