♦—SANDY (O re.) POST Thur».. Jan 8, 19«, (Sac. 2) Ramp meters being used on Interstate 5 The ramp meter signal system on 1-6 North w ill be turned on Wednesday, Jan. 7. Signals on 1-6 freeway on- ramps between the Broad way and Interstate bridges w ill operate fro m 6 :30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., southbound only, and from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., northbound only. Mondays through Fridays Although ramp metering has been in effect for several years in ten different states, the 1-6 system marks a first fo r the Northwest. Oregon Department of Transportation crews w ill be stationed at the on-ramps Monday, Jan. 5 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday. Jan 6 from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. to distribute flyers which give notification to motorists of the Wed nesday tum-on date and hoi* to use the system. Ramp metering is designed to ease tra ffic congestion during rush hours by spreading out the tra ffic By controlling the flow of tra ffic entertng the freeway, stop and go conditions on the freeway are reduced This results in fewer accidents and improved gas mileage Average rush hour speed on 1-6 is expected to increase from 10 to 35 miles per hour Motorists w ill find the ramp meter signal different from intersection tra ffic signals in that the meter w ill flash from green to red with no interm ittent yellow light. The signal cyde w ill be short w ith only two seconds of green allowing just one car at a tim e to go through the signal and enter the freeway The red time w ill vary depending upon the ramp, from two to thirteen seconds According to Robert Both man. Metropolitan Adminis tra to r fo r the Oregon D ep a rtm e nt of T ra n s portation. changing driving habits of some motorists is necessary to make the system work to everyone's advantage. “ Motorists who could be entering 1-6 as fa r back as Going Street now using city streets to avoid congestion on the freeway and are then entering the freeway from Umon-Swift’ said Bothman. “ I f people-continue to use the freeway this way with the ramp meters in use. they w ill find excessive and un necessary waits ” Bothman emphasizes that with ramp metering, freeway congestion w ill be significantly reduced. “ The freeway w ill now be the best route.” “ I f motorists learn to use the ramp nearest to where they start their tn p , they w ill save themselves a good deal of time and fru stra tio n '’, said Bothman A carpool lane is provided at each on-ramp for emergency vehicles, buses and vehicles w ith more than one occupant.
