Thur»., Aug 21, I960 (Sec 1) SANDY (O re ) POST—3 SEPTEM B ER Curriculum changes due at Sandy Grade School Sometimes the changes in school cu rriculum aren’t appreciated or even noticed by the people they affect the most — the students. But changes this year in the operation of the Sandy Elem entary D is tric t w ill make a strong contribution to the academic report card of the district Spanish w ill be introduced to students at Cedar Ridge. An expanded guidance and counseling service w ill be available and the Title 1 program has been reorganized to concentrate on reading and mathematics. The Spanish class w ill be introduced as an elective class to the seventh and eighth graders at Cedar Ridge. The option is being presented to the younger students, according to Principal Randi I>euthold, so the school w*ill be able to have Spanish 1 and 2 for next year. In the past, counseling was available only to students in the Upper Grades. This year, however, the program is being expanded to assist the students in a ll grades throughout the disancV A new counselor has been hired to fill the position and ad m in istra to rs are excited about offering the new service. The revised T itle 1 program is an off-shoot of last year’s special education program . This year the teacher, who alternated time between special education and Title 1 last year, w ill be fulltim e behind the reading and math program at Fir- wood and Sandy Elementary Schools. Those are two new positions. There w ill be no Title 1 at Cedar Ridge. There will, however, be an aide in math and an aide in reading. They w ill expand on what the students learn in those classes. Ralph Branson who heads the program said the students w ill get better service w ith professional level attention on an in dividual basis with the new alignment Future changes in the d is tric t’s cu rricu lu m w ill come as a result of new citizen cu rriculum committees that the district w ill form to help it study the writing component of the district’s course of study. The plan was introduced last year with a social studies rev ision and. Superintendent Clark Lund expects that the new committees w ill become “ s ta n d a r d o p e ra tin g procedure” in the future. Carol Ann Erickson w ill teach first grade at the Sandy building. She is a Portland State University graduate. Lifelong Sandy area resident Gloria Swanton w ill become an art teacher at Cedar Ridge. She did her student teaching in Sandy last year M iriam Mann, with two years experience in Gresham, w ill teach fourth grade at Sandy. Four positions are still being staffed. They include two special education in structors, one fifth grade teacher and one math in structor for Cedar Ridge. Southern Oregon College graduate Nancy Douglas will teach fourth grade at Fir- wood School. Anita Elgin, will teach a combined fourth and fifth grade at Firwood. Previously, she had sub stituted in the Sandy and Boring districts.
