Curriculum changes due
at Sandy Grade School
Sometimes the changes in
school cu rriculum aren’t
appreciated or even noticed
by the people they affect the
most — the students. But
changes this year in the
operation of the Sandy
Elem entary D is tric t w ill
make a strong contribution
to the academic report card
of the district
Spanish w ill be introduced
to students at Cedar Ridge.
An expanded guidance and
counseling service w ill be
available and the Title 1
program
has
been
reorganized to concentrate
on reading and mathematics.
The Spanish class w ill be
introduced as an elective
class to the seventh and
eighth graders at Cedar
Ridge. The option is being
presented to the younger
students,
according to
Principal Randi I>euthold, so
the school w*ill be able to
have Spanish 1 and 2 for next
year.
In the past, counseling was
available only to students in
the Upper Grades. This year,
however, the program is
being expanded to assist the
students in a ll grades
throughout the disancV A
new counselor has been hired
to fill the position and ad
m in istra to rs are excited
about offering the new
service.
The revised T itle
1
program is an off-shoot of
last year’s special education
program . This year the
teacher, who alternated time
between special education
and Title 1 last year, w ill be
fulltim e behind the reading
and math program at Fir-
wood and Sandy Elementary
Schools.
Those are two new
positions. There w ill be no
Title 1 at Cedar Ridge. There
will, however, be an aide in
math and an aide in reading.
They w ill expand on what the
students learn in those
classes.
Ralph Branson who heads
the program said the
students w ill get better
service w ith professional
level attention on an in
dividual basis with the new
alignment
Future changes in the
d is tric t’s cu rricu lu m w ill
come as a result of
new citizen
cu rriculum
committees that the district
w ill form to help it study the
writing component of the
district’s course of study.
The plan was introduced
last year with a social studies
rev ision and. Superintendent
Clark Lund expects that the
new committees w ill become
“ s ta n d a r d

procedure” in the future.
