The vehicle—to be pur chased used in a state sur plus sale, w ill enable small groups to take outside o r g a n iz a tio n a l and recreational trips, plus allow for personal transportation requests from handicapped elderly The c ity received the p re lim in a ry grant award notice from Clackamas County Area Agency on Aging for supplem ental Older Americans Act Title III funds Final approval from the (Xfice of Elderly Affairs should come by June 1, ac cording to Sandy Senior Center D ire c to r Dick Halvorson The center now ex periences heavy pressure on its mini-bus which some handicapped seniors cannot use because of the high step- up The new vehicle would also E p is c o p a l St. Jude's Episcopal Church Women’s Bake Sale w ill be held Saturday, April 8. at the Sandy Senior Center, Homemade cream pies. take the strain off personal vehicles pressed into service by s ta ff members and volunteers The center has volunteer drivers, but Halvorson said that more are needed Besides attending outside meetings and small group r e c re a tio n a l fu n c tio n s , Halvorson said the new vehicle could help in delivering Senior Center's “ meals on wheels,” a program bringing hot food to the homes of about 12 area seniors daily The center hopes to serve w o m e n homemade bread and m uf fins as well as other home baked goods w ill be available The bake sale w ill start at 9 a m and continue until 4:30 p la n 250 individuals this year in a growing program The seniors plan to move center activities into the old Baptist church which the city is acquiring. Heavy pressure on private vehicles also has posed a lia b ility question which Halvorson said the center luckily has not had to bridge yet During the first half of 1977. some 179 people utilized this transportation service. Some 20-25 handicapped seniors have been served by tran sp o rta tio n assistance from the senior center in a six-month period. Beginning bridge players are invited to the center next Monday afternoon. A volunteer instructor w ill be available to help new players learn to play bridge. Registration is open for several trips, including: Jantzen Beach and Van couver Mall on April 14, the Grotto on April 28 and Salem Cherry Blossoms which w ill be scheduled within the next two weeks. A trip to Reno may be planned for June if enough interest is shown. This would be a three day, two night trip w ith tra n sp o rta tio n , ac commodations and a free coupon book included in the cost Contact the Sandy Senior Center if you are interested in a Reno trip. Tuesday, April 11, is the potluck for Hoodland area seniors at the Mt Hood Lions Club. Bring a potluck dish and your table service.
