It was a real treat to visit Leavenworth, Wash and see what that city has done The merchants and area residents got together early in the 1960 s to come up with solutions to save the economy of the area. After a 2 4 year study, it was determined the area should promote tourism Before this, the area was based mostly on a logging economy. To get the increase in tourist traffic, the city began in 1965 to develop around the Bavarian Village theme. In the first year, only two businesses rem odeled to fit the theme, but in the next few years almost every business followed and now has a Bavarian design Also, many of the homes in the town and surrounding area have a similar design. Many in the Sandy area are ex pressing the need for Sandy to develop around a central design theme to help the city ’s idenity as the mass of urban Portland and Gresham moves this way Also, it would help promote the city as a place to stop and visit rather than a place to drive quickly through. If the highway department ever decides to move Highway 26 out of Sandy, the development of the area around a theme would make the city a place for tourists to visit and help keep the economy of the area going Sandy has a beautiful natural setting at the gateway to the Mt. ' C h irp : fotte Fottio^ Keep Pressure On For Signals The Sandy Area Cham ber of Commerce is right in continuing the pressure for signals on Highway 26 in Sandy The letter from the State Highway Department this week isee page 1) contirms what Saituy aica ivoidcr.ts already know: there is a need for these traffic signals The highway department states that "it would appear that under present funding levels that we would be able to consider these locations sometime during the 1974-75 bien nium.” If the city and area residents will pin with the chamber, maybe this "consider" could be changed to ‘ will” and the city "will" get the signals. Let’s hope we do not have to wait until 1975. County works to revise subdivision ordinance Clackamas County is in the process of establishing a new subdivision ordinance The revised ordinance will be brought before the county planning commission on Nov 27 at a regular planning meeting Before this meeting, the county is trying to get the document out before as many Commissioners want citizen input The Clackamas County Commissioners want to keep citizen participation active in county planning The commissioners this past week agreed in principle to continue this par tic i pat ion in the county comprehensive land use plan This was done under the urging of M rs Joyce Cohen, chairm an of the form er plan Coordinating Council committee which has been working to help revise the land-use study The county w ill seek the citizen input through the form ing of several neigh horhood advisory groups These groups will only be advisory Wl11 6** selected through town hall meetings to be held throughout the county by the com m iss loners The county commissioners are also •eeking more citizen input in the actual work on land use studies in the county The most recent study underway concerns the Boring Sandy area ( See separate story on Page 1).
