The hearing is scheduled at the Commission's Portland headquarters. 1634 SW Alder, and w ill begin at 10 am . Only the opening dates w ill be set by the Commission at that ¡tim e since biological in formation on which to base length of seasons, bag limits, and other rules w ill not be available General regulations for the 1973 seasons w ill be established in May for big game animals and in late July or early August for upland birds and small game All persons interested are invited to attend the hearing Recommendations may be submitted to the Commission in writing or may be presented orally at the meeting With the exception of several special hunts, the 1972 elk seasons are over for the year We urge all elk hunters to dig down in their wallet for the elk hunter’s report card, fill in the several questions asked, and return the card to the Com mission The card is self- addressed and no stamp is needed You w ill be making an im portant contribution to help determine the elk harvest for 1972 by the return of this card Although return cards are not used to compute total harvest (this is accomplished by a questionnaire survey of 20,000 hunters), the cards are used to prorate the elk take by game management unit and special hunting area The more cards returned, the more accurate are the results The report card is issued with each elk tag and bears the same serial number I t ’s also that time of year to sign up for emergency hunts which may be held in 1973 Nimrods interested should file applications by postcard giving name, address, telephone number, and the county applied for Eligible hunters must be at least 18 years of age The filing deadline is January 15. Emergency hunts are used by the Game Commission to control crop damage if and when such damage becomes chronic There is no guarantee that any emergency hunt w ill be held during the coming year, but to be eligible to participate, hunters must have their names on the county rosters Generally such hunts are held within a few days following the emergency ' A hunting license is not needed to apply but is required if a hunter is called to par ticipate Nor is a big game tag needed, but the hunter who takes an animal during the hunt must purchase a >5 tag before the animal becomes .egally his.
