Hood students are going to be looking th is fa ll to local businesses for part-time work to help defray their college expenses The college itself is "usually” a large employer for many students through the "w ork study" program Federal monies provide 80 per cent of students' wages while the college picks up the remaining 20 per cent for work done on campus The formula w ill be the same this fall but the problem is a cutback in Federal funds Simply enough, fewer college jobs are going to be available so students are going to have to look off-campus for part-time work, MHCC fin a n c ia l aid p e r sonnel are predicting as many as 2,000 students are going to be looking for part-tim e jobs A job placement service at the college helps students find jobs Through em ploym ent listings, job counselors screen students and refer those most q u a lifie d to the respective employers A larger job list is essential this fall since more students are going to be looking for work Employers in East M ult nomah County are encouraged, urged, cajoled and what have you to c a ll the MHCC placement office 1666-1561, Ext 264 and 265) when openings occur Students with a wide array of skills are going to be available for employment MHCC trains students in some 50 vocational and technical programs which means that many have already acquired considerable skill in a number of areas They’ll be looking for day work, night work, weekend w o r k - in sh ort, th e y ’ re available anytime To help the college's job placem ent personnel, em ployers should provide a full description of job requirements and em ployee expectations when calling in job openings By hiring MHCC students, employers w ill be helping in two ways—students w ill get the financial help they need plus, in many cases, the students w ill receive invaluable practical experience in th e ir career fields The philosophy of the placement service is basically, “ No job is too big no job is too small " Again, anyone w ith job openings < part tim e or full tim e ' is asked to list those openings w ith the MHCC placement office There are many students whose education is going to depend on their ability to get part-tim e work this year M eistersingers to give benefit The Gresham Meistersingers w ill present a benefit concert Friday.
