Powell Gresham threshed every year and it was kept in the barn in a large bln with a hinged cover. This grain was fed out during the year to a large band of hogs and also to the herd of cows. Grandpa watched the grain pret ty closely as he knew just how much should be fed out to keep the stock in good condition. One fall it seemed as though the amount of grain was going down too fast. At first he thought he imagined It, but as time went on he was sure some one was stealing it. He rather suspected that one of the Bull Run homesteaders who had worked for him might be responsible. The grain seemed to disappear at regular Intervals, so when he deemed the time was about right for another haul, he got up one morning at 3 a.m. ily filling a sack. and sure enough found the sus pected party in the grain bin bus- Grandfather was a fair man and if the culprit had asked him for the grain or had volunteered to work for it he wouldn’t have re fused him, as he believed In giv ing everyone a fair show but he hated dishonesty. Banks are robbed, cars are stolen, houses are broken into and contents tak en and what isn’t stolen Is often destroyed. Nothing Is safe from such vandalism. In pioneer days honesty was pretty much the policy. The houses were never locked. A workman could leave his tools by the side of the road and come back the next day and find them just where he had left them. However Grand pa Hoffman had one experience with dishonesty, though If there Is ever an excuse for dishonesty, perhaps there was one there. There were several families who had taken up homesteads on the ridge the other side of the Little Sandy which is now In the Bull Run reserve. There was no road, only a trail from a homes tead this side of the Little Sandy. So their supplies had to be car ried In on horse or, lacking ahor se, by their own effort«. Several of these homesteaders worked for Grandpa Hoffman and as he was never without a good supply of staples they got much of what they needed from him. In fact, the plenty of everything Grandpa had was too big a temp tation for one of them. Grain was yons in the middle of the night to get the grain which was need ed to feed his few chickens. But stealing simply was not tolerated in a pioneer society. // FAMOUS NAME BRANDS Sale Continues YOUTH FOR CHRIST The feature length motion pic ture "In His Steps" will be shown at Youth for Christ Saturday, Aug. 15, at Benson high school, 7:45 n.m. * TRAILER RENTALS ★ VACATION & U-HAUL TRAILERS Many One of a Kind ______ COME IN EARLY For Best Selection In All Departments NOTHING DOWN 3 YEARS TO PAY Listen to Station Richfield Service Loop Hiway r MU 7-3456 fOFFICIAU ILFORD ^CLEARANCE/ IT’S A FACT-OUR’64s ARE THE BEST-SELLING FORDS EVER!
