A little fa st “fig g erin g ” w ill show this to ta l to com e out 7 tons, 118 pounds of stra w b erries p e r acre. Q uite a rec ord for any y e a r b u t even m ore im pressive w hen one considers the poor h arv estin g conditions th is season and also th a t th e re w ere no o th e r “5- T on” applicants from C lack am as C ounty in 1958. J a rv is has b u ilt a re p u ta tio n as a good stra w b e rry grow er w ith high yields in past years, his highest past production w as 8 tons of stra w b e rrie s p er acre. T he J a rv is B erry F arm is located some 5 m iles southeast of Sandy and consists of 124 acres in all, m ostly seeded dow n to grass. S traw b e rries are th e only ro w -cro p and th e o th e r im p o rtan t “crop” on th e place a re th e geese w hich do F arm fam ilies w ho have farm ed th e sam e land co n tin uously for a h u n d red y ears or m ore w ill be honored at the S ta te F a ir com ing up by th e O regon S ta te D ep artm en t of A g ricu ltu re headed by R obert J. S tew ard. Com ing to o u r office re cently w ith docum ents to su p p o rt th e ir claim w ere Mrs. G ladys L ang and Mrs. E sther W ilbroad, g ran d d a u g h ters of m ost of th e w eeding in the s tra w b e rry fields. W hat are th e secrets of high production? “No secrets,” says Jarv is, “ju st a m a tte r of sound practices carried out a t th e rig h t tim e.” Some of thejje sound practices are: Use of O regon certified plants. F am ilies of these th re e are still farm ing a portion of the o r iginal donation land claim petitioned by G eorge W. Ja c k - son, Sr. O ctober 1, 1849. In evidence also w as th e p aten t signed by P resid en t Jam es B uchanan about 10 y ears later. G eorge W ashington Jackson Sr. was born in Easton. P e n n sylvania May 10, 1825. At the age of 12 he w as sent o Illi nois w here he w as apprenticed to a tan n er. He cam e to O re gon as we recollect from th e evidence, in 1847. L a te r he re tu rn e d to P ennsylvania. He re tu rn e d sh o rtly to Oregon by w ay of Panam a. The d o n a tion claim included a section of 640 acres in tow nship 5 south 1 east. H ere he started farm ing and raised a fam ily of 14 children of w hom G eorge W ashington Jaskson, J r. was the youngest. Mrs. Lang, Mrs. W ilbroad and C arl Jackson are his descendants. G eorge W ashington Ja c k - son Sr. was a m an of parts. In addition to farm ing, he taught grade school, singing and d a n cing. He is th e a u th o r of a pioneer song and his descen d an ts hav e the original copy w ritte n by his hand. F o r one w in te r a t least, he ta u g h t the Bald H ill school n e ar th e p re sent Jacob Schnack place. E v id en tly in those days, and m uch later, fu n d s raised by assessm ent w ere not su f ficient fo r paying a good teacher. In this instance seven of th e n eighbors signed an ag reem en t to pay th e ir teach er $100 a q u a rte r fo r th re e q u a r ters. The signers w ere C harles N. V andervort, H. F. K aylor, Levi Davis, W illiam B rough ton, E sth er Todd, Jo h n W ilhoit and Jam e s O. F ru it. All the signers w ro te good h ands bu t the la tte r sig n atu re w as faded and w e cannot be too su re of it. The e ld er Jackson belonged to th e M asonic Lodge. He was appointed G lad Tidings P o st m aster in 1860. He operated a sm all ta n n e ry on Rock C reek and w as active in m ilitary affairs. In fact he w as appoin ted Colonel of the second re g im ent of th e te rrito ra l m ilitia A ugust 1, 1856 by B. F. H ard ing, acting G overnor. Pioneers w ere not w ith o u t social diversions. A m ong the docum ents ow ned by th e e l d e r Jac k so n ’s descendants is th e copy of an in v itatio n to a party. It read s as follows: “M ay M irth and Joy A - bound — G eorge W. At least th is is indicated by a series of ex p erim en ts on the U. S. F o restry E x p erim en t S tation at W ind R iver, W ash ington. The area rep resen ted is Site 4 w hich is not the best. In 1925 plan tin g s w ere m ade 4x4 ft. - 6x6 ft. and 10x10 ft. N earby is a n a tu ra l stand of th e sam e age. The following tab le tells of trees rem aining, volum e of board feet p er acre, and o th er essential data at the end of 33 years, at various planting spacings: Trees rem aining p e r acre: 4x4 ft - 1,790; 6x6 ft - 1,032; 10x10 ft - 401; n a tu ra l stand sam e age - 681. V olum e board ft: 4x4 ft - 1.232; 6x6 ft - 3,913; 10x10 ft- 13,202; n a tu ra l stand, sam e age - 5,311. A verage d iam eter b reast h eight-inches: 4x4 ft- 4.1; 6x6 ft - 4.9; 10x10 ft - 7.5; n a tu ra l stand, sam e age - 5.4. A verage heig h t (5 larg est trees) feet: 4x4 ft. - 49; 6x6 ft - 53; 10x10 ft. - 65; n a tu ra l stand, sam e age - 56. T he 10x10 spacing m ay have th e m ore desirable stand for th is low site. A 12x12 spa cing is sim ilar so fa r as vo l um e is concerned b u t has th e app earan ce of h aving a sp a cing w hich is too w ide. T he th in k in g at this tim e is th a t 8x8 foot spacing is a - bout rig h t especially on b e tte r sites. The trees in th is e x p erim en t w ere not artificially th in n ed a fte r planting. This is also tru e in the n a tu ra l stand. The d if ference in volum e board feet p er acre at th is tim e seem s especially sig n ifican t .. 1232 board feet on th e 4x4 p lan tin g com pared to 13,202 board feet on th e 10x10 planting. T his e x p e rim e n t w ould «lead to th e conclusion th a t thick stan d s should be th in n ed at a fa irly early age. This is ex actly w h a t a n u m b e r of C lackam as C ounty tre e fa rm ers are doing.
