Jensen had been named curry county out standing Cooperator for 1972 by the Curry County Soil and Water Conservation District earlier In the year. As area winner he was presented with a placque at the Annual Meet ing of the Oregon Association of Conservation Districts In Lincoln City. Jensen has operated his 160 acre farm for over 30 years, becoming a district cooperator In 1955. He was one of the first cooperators after organ, lzatlon of the district. During the majority of those 30 years, he was music director In the Port Orford-Langlois school system s, and later owned mu- sic stores In Port Orford and North Bend. Even while engaged In other pursuits, he was applying con servation measures on his farm, starting with spring de. velopment, stock water pipe lines and pasture planting. Following his retirement from the music business, he has ac- celerated his conservation prac tices, Including underground tile drainage as a soil Improve, ment, woodland management, pasture fertilization and plant ing. in addition, he Is a lead, er In the blueberry lndustry of this area. "Blueberries are a good cash crop," says Char- lie, who was the prime mover In developing a blueberry field day this year, and correctly maintains that blueberries have a great potential In Curry county. Charlie Jensen has found that conservation pays dividends, In more ways than one. The more he applies, the better his farm operation becomes. Lutherans Set Christmas Service A Christmas Eve family ser vice will be held at the Zion Lutheran church Dec. 24 at 9 :30 p.m. The service will feature a film strip entitled "Son of a Virgin." There will be singing of traditional Christmas carols and choir numbers. All fam ilies and friends are welcome. CONTEST DEADLINE Entries in the Curry Coun ty Fair Theme Contest must be submitted no later than Dec. 31. The winning entry will receive a $10 prize. Counties Get Co-op Funds The Department of Revenue has announced the transfer of $484,137 44 to the Trea surers of 31 counties This money represents collections by the Department of gross earnings taxes from electric cooperatives throughout the State The tax Is levied in lieu of ad valorem taxes on the "transmission and distribu tion lines" of the coopera tives Other properties owned by the cooperatives are in cluded on the tax rolls and subject to ad valorem taxes in the same manner as all other property The amount collected this year is about 12% larger than last year The proceeds from this tax are distibuted 75% to the county school fund and 25% to the county general fund The amount distributed to Curry county w as$36.944 68 By order the Curry County Board of Commissioners ap proved hiring Sharon Leming, Clerk Typist 2, in the County Sanitarian’s office; Jim Bau- mer, as extra help at the Coun ty Shop; William Michael Strain was reinstated ' . the conclusion of his military s e r vice and Elwin A. City Officials Take Oath Port Will Apply For Im provem ent Funds Port engineers were given the "go-ahead" Tuesday night to make application for grants from the Oregon Marine Board for water front renovation and recreational parking near the dock. Two areas are included In the application that would pro vide parking for between 10 and 15 commercial boats and around 100 vehicles. The pro posal calls for filling between the cannery and dock for boat storage, and east of the can nery for recreational parking. Total estimated cost of the project, divided into Phase I and Phase II, respectively, is $54,737. The Phase I estimate Is $15,716, and phase II Is $39,021. NO ACTION ON REQUEST No action was taken on a request from H.C. Kern of Gold Beach on his proposal to establish a barge fishing and charter boat service out of the port. Kern has petitioned the Port for permission to operate a shuttle boat from the port to a fishing barge anchored In the bay, and for a deep sea fishing charter operation. The barge would accomodate 45 persons for bottom fishing. A "snag” in the negotiations occured when Kern asked for an “ exclusive" on chartering, if he put in the barge facil ity, that would give him all booking rights for other char ter boats that might want to operate from here. The Port Commission was prepared to offer a ten year lease on the floating dock for his operation, but did not want to include the booking rights. Kern said It wasn’t enough because he needed some kind of protection If he was going to invest $40 or $50,000 In the operation.
