S W P POPT OPFOPP E le e t Ellis Foster Iam Ellis Foster, your RepublicanCandidate for County Commissioner. I am seeking this position because I feel I am better qualified than my opponent. I was born and raised in the PortOrford-Langlois area. My grandparents came to Curry County over 100 years ago, and I have lived h e r e for all of my 47 years except 3 | years in World War II, so I am no new-comer to this area. I am well acquainted with the problems of the people in Curry County. I own a sheep and cattle ranch which I operate. I feel the old tradition of one commissioner from the Brookings area, one from the Gold Beach area and one fro m the Port Orford-Langlois area to be of good business judgment and sound thinking and has worked for many years. I believe a commissioner should have a good knowledge of the county roads, especially in his area. Last winter and up to the present time the road department has a ftoverbial White Elephant on the Langlois Hill trying to reconstruct a road in the clay soil in the winter time. It is still almost impas sable. Just give any one on the Langlois Hill road a call and hear the facts of wasted county money. In this bus iness of road construction there are things you can do and things you cannot do. I have not known of a com mission in recent years consulting anyone who lives on the county road before starting major construction, if the people don't like what the court does, just 'tough'. I think the people concerned should always be consult ed. I consider myself to have a broad knowledge of road construction and maintenance having built and m ain tained numerous logging roads in this area. And now to the money situation. I feel the road department has more money than they are able to spend efficiently. The County Court is try ing to find ways to legally go into the real estate bus iness. When the schools are hurting so badly for some financial assistance. By cutting some coirnty budgets a little and the road budget a lot, there would be con siderable O&C money available as a school tax offset. I am not in favor of building a new jail facility at this time. I oul . appreciate your vote on election day. Thank you. Pd. Pol. The three of th e m formed a pretty good working team and I'm satisfied it should stay that way, I served on the local city council four years with ol' Ira (he was the mayor) and he a l ways acted for the best inter ests of the people. In my opin ion his integrity is beyond re proach. The sad truth of political matters is that someone is al- w a y s banging away at office holders and accusing them of over-spending or wrong-spend ing or playing favoritism. The politician has always been the target of every gripe. . . not sit uations or reasons; and oppon ents are continually trying to conjur up all kinds of evil go ings-on by the office holder. Ask yourself th is.. . have you ever seen budgets reduced simp ly because some candidate or politician said he was going to do it? Not an your rinny tin tin. They climb because there are always more citizens wanting more services.. . and if it Isn't for one thing it would be for another. I'm not convinced you can reduce spending until you can reduce desire.. . the desire for anything that will improve conditions.
