Rogue River Sand and G ravel Co. waa taking gravel from a source about 1 1/1 m iles up Pistol River road when one of the.men found a billfold. Jack brought the wallet home and it was discovered In the Jeep by his w ife. The dates on the con tents caused her great alarm and she contacted the sh eriff's office. That office radioed Lane County In an attempt to locate the owner, but the offices were closed on Saturday. M rs . M c Leod decided to do some calling on her own. She called the operator at E u g e n e and asked that they check the telephone lists In s u r r o u n d i n g towns. Surely enough at Cottage Grove the name Harold L. Landers was listed. When Mrs. McLeod c a ll ed him , he had a “ Yes” answer to all her questions: “ Yes, his named was Harold le ro y Lan ie r • " | “ Yes, h l* father's name X *s Kent Landers” | “ Yes, he fo rm erly dved at C resw ell” j “ T e s , he lost a billfold 20 years ago” — between Cresw ell and Eugene, as he was going to see Dorothy H a rris , the g ir l he planned to (and did) m a rry , M rs . W alter C ram ’s niece. What a re lie f to M rs. McLeod who was afraid they would have to start sifting the gravel for a body missing for 20 years! How did the wallet travel from near Eugene to the wilds of C u rry County, and where had It been, enroute? It was tn good shape, the papers Inside were legible. In fact, tn such con dition that It could not have lain out In rain and wet weather fo r any length of time. Whoever found It In the firs t place had removed only the $90 In b ills; the papers, pictures, cred it cards, etc. remained In tact. It Is to be hoped that person needed those dollars worse than that young man who was counting his nickels and dimes in preparation for s ta rt- tng m arried life. How the b i l l f o l d travelled over ICO miles and appeared20 y e a r s later In good condition w ill no doubt remain a mys tery, because the person who could te ll the story w ill not com* forw ard, since honesty Is apparently not on* of his (o r h er) virtues. The story does not end un happily’, because Harold had long ago given up ever seeing that billfold , and M rs. M c le o d was only happy to know that the young man whose name was on the contents was alive and w ell, Bridge Tourney Set in Eureka Tournament bridge players from Southern Oregon to Sant* Rosa, and Redding on the east, w ill gather hi Eureka for the eighth annual Eureka Sectional Bridge Championships, Oct. 22, 23 and 24. and comes each year to fish on the Rogue. The tournament, matching the north coast's finest duplicate b r i d g e players against each other. Is highlighted by the two- sesslon Open P a ir * Champion ship on Saturday. But newcomers are also en couraged to participate and a special event la scheduled for them, the Fortuna Pairs on Sat urday night. Duplicate bridge Is the tourn ament form of regular social or contract bridge and differs only tn the scoring, trnt not In the actual play. Opening event tn the tourna ment la the M aster's Pairs Championship at 1:30 p.m . F r i day. The Men's and Women's Pairs Championships are set for Friday night, beginning at 8 o'clock. Saturday Is the day of the Open Pairs event, us well as the special Fortuna Pulrs. The tournament closes Sun day, w it h the Mixed P a lis Championships at 1 p.m. ami the Team of Four Championship at 7 p.m. tn the world of tournament bridge, the sectional ranks as one of the t h r e e moat Im portant bridge tournaments. The nationalchampionshlpa.the most Important event, are held three ttmea a year and this Novemtier w ill be held In San Francisco. AC CIDENT PUTS ONE IN HOSPITAL 7 Dan Cook, son of Fred Cook of Port O rford, Is In Sacred H eart Hospital In Eugene as a result of Injuries sustained in an automobile a c c i d e n t while riding as a passenger with Allan King. The accident occurred near the Lowell Jun ction early Sunday morning and King's car left the road. King was only slightly In jured though Cook's Injuries were more severe and he may have to rem ain hospitalized for quite some tim e.
