IFrom Mining Truth» N orth S a n tiam D istrict In the sum m er of 1930 a geologic reconnaissance was made o f part of the N orth Santiam district, a region for which alm ost no authen tic Information has been heretofore available. As long ago as 1892 mineral de posits were discovered by Mr. Dawes, who in the summer of 1930 was still a resident of the district. At times since the discoveries were made considerable development work has been done on about a dozen lodes, som e of which have produced gold, copper, and other metals. In 1930 the Amalgam ated Mines Company w as operating a mine near the mouth of B attle Axe Creek, at w hich it w as building a mill. This mine is on the lode or iginally located by Dawes. It is de- veloped by a 1,300-foot tunnel made by former owners. In A ugust the present operator had shipped to a sm elter ac arload o f ore taken from a stope above this tunnel. A few lodes along Agle Creek, in the northern part of the district, have been rather extensively de veloped, and considerable gold is said to have been produced from I ants Probably the veins are likewise related to the intrusive rock. 1 though most of them are ra th e r ' distant from its outcrops. As a rule the veins trend n o rth -1 west and extend for considerable distances. In general they are nar row, though ore shoots of work able size occur in places. The gold ore produced in the j vicinity of Ogle Creek came from | the upper and oxidized parts o f , the lodes, but in general the ox idized zone is relatively shallow, and in som e lodes it is lacking.
