Street Roots • June 16-22, 2017 Time Traction by Shaggy Poetry Page 13 Evicted By Hye Kelly Through the slippery river of time Some walk, some run, some fly We long to remember, and yearn to revive Those we miss in our lives In order to maintain direction, Or perspective through ragged storms We need to treasure the moments and the people with which they form Memories can be sweet as nectar, But often sour with time Anxiety over future dreams, Can lead to destruction or crime The tears stain her face as she reads the fine print. She drops her hands in her lap, gazing lifelessly out the window. The red ink still fresh, staining her fingertips as they run over the letters spelling out evicted. Her breathing grows rapidly. Her fists clench the papers tightly. She sees only red. The paper is discarded. The lamp is smashed along with the shattered picture frames, holding shattered memories. She screams. She screams for her life. She yells out for her hard work earning her nothing. She cries for how she ruined her life. She wails for all the mistakes leading up to the lowest moment in her life. The moment you lose everything. The moment you are erased. The moment you are evicted. If we focus on life and those within it, We’ll see more of the purpose, and fight for the finish.
