Poetry Page 14 S treet Roots • March 2 5 -3 1 ,2 0 1 6 Sunday Mornings in the Park By Kareem Ali Sunday mornings in the park They crowd the final bench, Out Where columns of porcelain Statues used to be. Troll by Sunset As the pain drips through my soul I question this reality I love Caught between consequences and dreams Waiting and wondering what it will take to become whole Are these soggy feet just a manifestation Or do the gods hate me with a passion Going insane now I’ve lost control Spiraling down a path of destruction Caught between what is, was and will be I push away those I love with the 10 ft. pole It’s just a defense mechanism learned over time Allowing me to vent through shyness Another crazy hippy on a roll Strobing through life spreading magic However so many think I am just a dick What if I’m right and I don’t have a soul Just an empty shell of what was I like to believe I can heal my brain damage But life is expensive, 1 can’t afford this toll So I keep moving, drifting spot to spot Wondering will I ever control all these thoughts Or am I doomed to forever be a troll. Between games of chess and checkers They manufacture time To oogle older women, The ones passing by Soaking in an elixir of wrinkles And middle age. Yet these gentlemen Still fan the smoldering flames of life Of forgotten student days, Reminiscent of unlit embers And uncaught fish.
