B u tte Falls C h a rte r S chool N ew s edcbaZYXWVU High School Track & Field Grows by L e ap s and Bounds T he B utte F alls T rack & Field team had a very successful year. Lead by head coach C hase E llis, this sm all, but cohesive group of six athletes w orked and played hard w hile building skills, cam araderie and friendship. T he team w as young and consisted of ju st 9th and 10th graders. E xam ining each athlete's m arks over the course of the season, it is clear that their grow th w as phenom enal. F or exam ple, in the shot put freshm an M ycala P atereau im proved by over 5'; in the discus she im proved by over 1 T and w as the only freshm an in the league's top 10. In the javelin M ycala is the first girl in B utte F alls to throw the javelin. S he tossed an im pressive 95' 4" in the D istrict m eet at N orth B end H S , placing 3rd, one place out of S tate qualification. T he closest other freshm an placed 22 spots behind. A nother exam ple of som e im pressive grow th com es from sophom ore D akota M errifield w ho threw the shot put and discus. H e finished the season in the shot put w ith a near 4' im provem ent and in the discus he finished w ith a throw close to 20' better than in his first m eet. A ustin H arvey, another freshm an javelin and discus throw er, beat his m arks by 20' and 2T , respectively. H e m oved up the school record list to 2nd all tim e in the javelin. T he season ended on a high note on M ay 20th in E ugene. S ophom ore Jim m y K inyon, w ho, at the beginning of the season barely m ade the league's top 20 in the javelin, exploded into the top 3 at D istricts and qualified on a w ildcard fo r the S tate T rack at the U niversity of O regon. T hough his perform ance at the m eet w as below his personal expectations, Jim m y w as able to throw in front of over 5,000 fans and athletes and represent his com m unity, school and fam ily. C om m unity m em bers and fam ily w ere also on hand to add support. C ongratulations to a successful and com petitive season and w e look forw ard to seeing our athletes in action next year. Middle School Track and Field T he 2016 B utte Falls M iddle S chool T rack & F ield team had 12 participants ranging from 5th through the 8th grades. T here are m any opportunities in T rack & F ield that calls to an individual. S om e of w hich are the great cam araderie betw een team m ates, the w eekly effort in trying to beat one's last record, and the fact that there are 17 events (16 at B F). T here is som ething fo r everyone: sprinting, long distance, throw ing, jum ping and hurdling. O ur team did very w ell internally as w ell as m easured against other local schools. B y the end of the season, our team set five new school records and 17 grade level records. O ur 5th grade girls w ere very im pressive. G w en Lom as, w ho started out last in S outhern O regon after her first m eet in the S hot P ut and D iscus, ended the year being the farthest 5th grade throw er in this part of the S tate, and 7th in O regon fo r all 5th grade girls in the discus, w hile setting an im pressive schoolrecord of over 43'. O ur other 5th grade girl, A ndi S parks, set an overall school record in the 100 m eter dash, w inning her last race by over 10 m eters. S he scratched her last long jum p attem pt by 1/2" w hich w as tw o feet farther than the school record and w ould have landed her 3rd in the S tate. W e look forw ard to their return. W e also had a strong 6th grade class of boys. W ith only four athletes on the team , in five events, these boys placed in the top 12 in O regon com pared to all other 6th graders at all classifications. F or m ost o f the season w e had tw o top 4 placings and a 1st. T his group set an overall school record in the 4x1 00m relay by alm ost five seconds. A nd com peting at the A ll-S chool 6th grade conference m eet in A shland, took 4th out of 14 schools in S outhern O regon, m any of w hom had as m any as 30 athletes. O ur 7th and 8th graders slow ly chipped aw ay at the records as w ell, m oving up the board in the S hot P ut, D iscus, 100m , Long Jum p and Javelin. Just like any athlete w ho is im proving, they are hungry fo r S pring's return. T his w as a very productive and form ative year fo r our young athletes and w e look forw ard to seeing w hat is in store fo r them next year.
