-Ya rd Sa le- fedcbaZYXWVU Saturday . June 21 st! District Speech Tournament was a Success! By Marcia Warren Butte Falls High School hosted the 2003 OSAA District Speech Tournament. The winners competed at the State Tournament held in Eugene at the University of Oregon, April 24th- 26th. There were four high schools at the local competition: Eagle Point, Grants Pass, North Valley, and Butte Falls. There were 67 students, 33 judges and 4 coaches and 2 assistant coaches attending the tournament. The Butte Falls Community, Butte Falls Elementary and High School teachers and staff all donated the day to help make the tournament a success. Wendy Earl provided all of the food, snacks and drinks for the judges and made pizzas for the participants. The spring snow and the Butte Falls Highway were not a deterrent to the traveling teams. The students that attended State from Butte Falls included: Melody Carlisle- Humorous; Britani Johnston- Serious; Jamee McIntyre- Poetry; and Victoria Lawrence and Bonnie Biando- Student Congress. Britani Johnston and Jamee McIntyre became Semi-finalist. Butte Falls High School placed 5th in the State in 3A/2A and 1 A schools. Small Town Girl is Fullfilling Her Dream of Working at the White House! By Cory Hamann £ -a w — Lilian Lawrence had her mind set and I ? S 3 wasn ’t going to settle for anything less. 4- 3 O H V} O t. JC u She wanted to be working at the White House and by golly she is working at the White House. She works in the Medical Unit assisting the Vice-President’s doctors. Her office is in the Old Executive Office Building which is right next to the White House. She is second civilian in the & unit and everyone else are either enlisted or officers of the military. She answers o phones, works on budget spreadsheets i o JoAnn Lyon, Doug Stewart, Amy Morrison, Sarah Thorne, Sarti Powell, John Adams, Grandma Ida, Lauri Dyer, Janie Moore, Roy Moore, Bob Burgoyne, Dianne Gorman and Rob Moeney. T3 O Congratulations! Congratulations to Jocelyn A. Bayne and her team members for taking 1st place in the World. 63 teams from 14 countries participated in Destination Imagination, which is similar to our Brain Bowl. Jocelyn and her team were 1st place in the region, 1st place in the State of California and 1st place in the World. Jocelyn is in the 7th grade and is in the advanced study program through her school. We are so proud of you and we love you very much... Love Grandpa and Grandma Shafer and Kristen £ £ (which include expenditures of the President/VP and the unit itself), certificates for hospitals (before the president goes anywhere the medical staff go to check out the town, hospital and even pick the bed where the president would be taken if he would have an emergency while there). She has a variety of jobs and never knows what to expect each day. She looks forward to it all. Great Job, Lilian and oh yeah, hope you have a great 23rd birthday June 30th.
