The firs t tournam ent attended by B utte Falls w as held a t P acific U niversity, in w hich th re e o f our speech students attended, and all th re e placed! These students w ere Lou H oyer w ith a firs t place trophy in N ovice D ram atic In - te rp re ta tio n , V allorie P etersen w ith a fo u rth place trophy in O pen H um orous, and S tacy S m ith w ith a fo u rth place tro ph y in O pen D ram atic In - te rp re ta tio n . The second S peech tournam ent th a t our N FL team attended w as a t S outh M e d fo rd H igh S chool, in w hich seven o f our students p a rtici- pated. These students w ere V ictoria Law rence, Johanna Lou H oyer, B ritani Johnston, V allorie P etersen, S tacy S m ith, S helley M arquard, and M elody C arlisle. O ut o f these seven students, th re e m ade it to finals. V ictoria Law rence com - peted in an O pen P ros containing th irty - e ig h t students, and w alked out w ith a firs t place tro - phy. V allorie P etersen also received a firs t place trophy in O pen H um orous, w hile S tacy S m ith w as a fin a list in O pen D ram atic In te rp re ta tio n . The last tournam ent th a t our team visited w as held a t the U niversity o f O regon. T his to u r- nam ent w as th e biggest tournam ent as fa r as num bers w ere concerned; th e re w ere over one- thousand com petitors m ostly from 3A and 4A d istricts, and from B utte Falls V allorie P etersen O th e r co m p e titors w ere M elody C arlisle, A m anda N ew by and T rae S tephenson.The B FH S chapter w as also nam ed C hapter o f th e Y ear fo r D istrict V I, based on points per student (B FH S has a large percentage o f th e ir student body in FB LA ). C ongratulations to everyone th a t placed, T he chapter w ill be traveling to th e sta te m eet in A p ril/ T hey w ill m ake everyone proud and received a fin a list trophy, and S tacy S m ith re ceived a sem i fin a list aw ard. For each branch o f speech com petition th e re is a d iffe re n t w ay in w hich to com pete. In D ram atic In te rp re ta tio n s th e speech m ust be serious and have no funny parts and be acted in a very serious but re a listic w ay. H um orous is a funny speech in w hich contend- ers a ct funny and use a speech th a t highlights hilarious aspects o f a book, play, o r m ovie. P ros a com petition in reading, w here all th a t m ust he done is to read a speech w hile p u ttin g em o- tions into it.
