3 PORTLAND LABOR PRESS INDUSTRIAL ANTITHESIS. » - ■ — O ne hundred m iners em ployed at the Midas m ine at H arriso n Gluch, Cal., were discharged last Saturday, and the mine was closed. T h e lock out was o rdered by the com pany be cause the m iners had notified an en gineer, recently em ployed, th a t he should join the union. H e refused and called for his tibie, but the com pany, earning the reason for doing so, told him to stay and discharged everybody else, union and nonunion men. T he M idas m ine is ow ned by the same com pany th at co n tro ls the G ladstone m ine at F rench Gulch, w here a w alk out occurred about a m onth ago. T he objection to the engineer on the part of the men was th at he had taken a jo b at th e G ladstone m ine after the m iners quit w ork there.
