It sounds easy. "Here's the opportunity. Take the job and go to w o rk!" But sometimes there are dangers, when we try to make big changes, Here are three: 1. When a person begins to earn better pay, he may not spend his money wisely. He suddenly wants to buy all the things he needs. "Buy now and pay tom orrow ," some businessmen w ill say. "Just sign, your name." And there follows a dizzy w h irl o f spending until the pocketbook is empty. When one begins to earn more money, he must go slowly, or he w ill wake up under a load o f debt. 2. When a person transfers to a better job, the way may be so strange and difficult that he w ill want to turn back. Cuando una persona empieza a ganar mejor sueldo, quizás no gaste bien. Pronto, quiere comprar todo lo que necesite. "Compre ahora y pague más tarde," unos mercantes dirán. "N o hay que hacer nada más que firm ar su nombre." Y luego sigue una sucesión de gas tos hasta que se encuentre vacía la cartera. Cuando uno empieza a ganar más, tiene que proceder lenta mente, a se despertará bajo un gran peso de deudas. 2. Cuando una persona consigue mejor empleo, el camino puede re sultar tan extraño y_ difícil que quizás quisieré volver hacia atrás. Suddenly he quits and goes back to the old way. What a tragedy! A ll the energy he used to lift himself * is lost. If this happens to you, don't be defeated. Gather up your energies fo r a new forward leap. Remember, if you succeed, your children's child ren w ill begin life on a different level. And what about your old friends? You can show them the way to fo llo w you. 3. When a person tries to rise, but slips and falls, he may decide to become a complainer or an agi tator. When one has great visions of success—but slips and falls—is this a proof that the w o rld is all wrong? The man w ho does not take new hope instantly is in danger o f sink ing in a swamp o f defeat. When we are frustated, it is all too easy to trust anyone who talks w ith us. But let's be cautious. W q may come under the influence of professional hate-peddlers, who are sure that the w orld is all wrong, the government is unfair, the“"pow- er structure" is trying to destroy us; Even before we start to regain oúr balance, w e may begin repeating the same theme song. For anyone, this is poison. There is no law o f nature to guarantee that all people have an equal chance in this w orld. And there is no man-made law that can keep bad luck from striking some people a thousand times harder than others. But if a person does not ienew his hope and faith—if, instead, he falls into th e easy habit o f agitating and complaining— he may destroy his own best chance to rise out o f poverty,—Don Wilcox?
