Several VISTAS complete an active year of service
Several VISTAs are leaving the
Valley M igrant League this week,
and they w ill be greatly missed. In
a recent VML board meeting some­
one mentioned that many o f our
VISTAs have made superb contri­
butions to our VML program.
Karen Berg completed her one-
year as VISTA Volunteer this week.
Because Karen enjoys her w ork,
• she asked to be extended another
4 months. She w ill continue w ork­
ing at the West Stayton Opportu­
nity Center where she has been ap­
pointed as Circulation Manager fo r
that area.
Alan Fujii, originally from Hono­
lulu, Hawaii, has been very active
as a Volunteer In Service To Amer­
ica. He has spent the past year
w orking at the Independence Op­
portunity Center where he met and
helped many friends. Alan also
taught judo classes which became
very popular. In addition, he was
a part tim e coach fo r baseball.
Helen Gorini has enjoyed her
w ork at the Woodburn O pportun­
ity Center. Looking back on the
past year she remembers working
as a Teachers Aide, 8 hours a day,
in tw o W oodburn Public Schools.
She also did some private tutoring
and assisted w ith 4-H Clubs. Helen
w ill be missed by her many friends
and students.
Elaine Kawasaki, after serving
one-year as VISTA Volunteer in the
Woodburn area, can be proud o f all
she has done. She organized the
W oodburn 4-H Club where she
taught sewing and cooking. Elaine
did a lot o f camp w ork and took
many children on fie ld trips. It is
her decision to return, to Hawaii.
I'm sure she w ill take many memo­
ries w ith her.
Richard Poliak, VISTA Volunteer,
came to Oregon from New York
City. Poliak has helped to organize
the em ployment services o f the
Woodburn and Sandy Centers.

received a $2500 loan under the
Farmer's Home Administration to
improve his vegetable crate busi­
ness near Orient. He makes crates
fo r packing lettuce and cabbage in
the fields. There has. been a short­
age of crates, leaving some crops
unpicked.
