A teen-age youth center opened
last Saturday in Woodburn.
It is
sponsored by the Woodburn Police
Department, under the direction of
Police Chief Robert J. Prinslow.
Many of the recreation facilities
were donated by citizens and organ­
izations of the community.
The
center was decorated by members
of the police department with the
help of many local teenagers.
On the wall, in the back of the
center, is a poem. It comes from the
sheriff of Marion County, Indiana.
We think it sums up many things
about teenagers, and hope you en­
joy reading it.

An "off the wall" poem from the Woodburn Youth Center
We read in the papers, we hear on the air
Of killing and stealing and crime everywhere.
We sigh and we say, as we notice The trend
This young generation, where w ill it end? -
But can we be sure that it's their fault alone?

That maybe a part of it might be our own.
Too much money to spend, too much idle time.
Too many movies of passion and crime.
Too many books not fit to be read.
Too much evil in what they said.
Too many children encouraged to roam.
By too many parents who won't stay at home.
Youth don't make the movies, they don't write the books
That paint the gay picture of gangsters and crooks.
They don't make the liquor, they don't run the bars.
'UPWARD BOUND' PROVIDES GREAT EXPERIENCE

They don't make the laws, and they don't make the cars.
They don't make the drugs that idle the brain,
More young people are getting
ready to go to college. Many of our
readers remember how "Upward
Bound" helped Emma Perez, Joe
Sifuentes, John Berrara and Frank
Garcia start college. They have all
finished one year at the University
of Oregon. Now some others have
the same chance.

People came from the University
on June 7 to talk to interested stu­
dents. Soon they w ill know if they
get to go.

The Valley Migrant League
needs your help! Our day care pro­
gram is in need of 150 cribs and
cots this summer.
We also need
sheets and mattresses (porta crib
size) for the cribs. Can you help?
The students who are chosen w ill
go to school all summer This w ill
help them get ready for college
classes. In September some of the
students may take college classes.
They may continue to "get ready"
for awhile longer, if they need it.

If you have any old sheets or
mattresses let us know at once. The
mattresses should be 27" wide by
42" long and 2" deep.
Sheets
should be about 52" wide by 65"
long.
The students w ill all have lots of
time to study. There w ill be plenty
of teachers to help them.

They w ill all say just what Emma,
John, Frank and Joe told us, "This
has been a great experience for us."
