But we must also equip our people to walk through those doors.” Lyndon B. Johnson President United States "Surely, it is not beyond our re sources nor our ingenuity to include in our w ar against poverty these always ‘excluded’ Americans (the migrants).’’ Sargent Shriver Director Office of Economic Opportunity The VALLEY . MIGRANT LEAGUE, sponsor of this newspaper, is a part of the President’s W ar on Poverty and is funded b y the Office of Economic Op portunity, Washington. D. C. THE M A N O N THE PHONE WAS UNHAPPY, BUT W HY? We received an anonymous phone call last week. The man want ed us to know that he was un happy. It concerned something this newspaper had printed about the price paid to strawberry pickers. He said that he got along fine until the Valley Migrant League came along. We tried politely to in vite him to our office to explain himself. Would he come? No. We asked again for his name. He wouldn't give it. But he did mention something very interesting. He said that pickers have earned as much as 8 and 9 thousand dollars working for him. We couldn't ask tor happier in formation than this. For if it is true that good pickers are able to earn such money, the battle against mi grant poverty is being won as it should be won — by workers earn ing good money for good work. Can other growers assure us that workers are able to earn such amounts during the picking season in Oregon? —D.W. good by t o a good f r i e n d .
