VISTA Volunteer April Scheyer,
of Sandy, reports that 10 people
have signed up for the G.E.D. clas­
ses there. She says many more are
exDected to enroll later.
The students in the G.E.D. class
w ill prepare to take a test to get
•their high school diploma. They
»will meet in the Sandy High School
ion Monday and Wednesday eve­
nings between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.
The teacher w ill be Orfey Ringering.
There is still room for more
people in the class. If you did not
finish high school and live in the
Sandy area, now is your chance to
get a diploma. See Ken Killary at
the Sandy Opportunity Center.

But Oregon
needed VISTA Volunteers to work
with migrants. And so she came to
the Willamette Valley.
"M y first impressions? Oh, boy!
We had some ideas from our train­
ing that we were going to carry a
big part of the program. Instead,
we carried beds, blankets and baby
cribs. Day Care needed our help to
move equipment.
We went to
work, saying to ourselves, 'Why
did we bother to study remedial
reading?' But soon the picture
changed."
Kaye went to Hillsboro, lived
for awhile in a migrant camp, and
helped with Day Care-and all at
once she loved her work. She was
working with little Spanish and
Anglo children.
Then she returned to Wood­
burn and began to do what she had
been trained to do.
She taught
reading in the camps and did in­
dividual tutoring at .the center. She
also did general contact work, and
she organized the distribution of
the VML newspaper in the Wood- ’
burn area. She and others made
trips each week to about 40 camps,
during the summer season.
Recently, VISTA Volunteer Dwig-
gins took charge of the eye clinic
at the Woodburn center .and organ­
ized the transportation for the fol­
low-up examination at Forest
Grove.
Her recreation? Movies, tele­
vision, and trips to the tourist places
in Oregon.
She has gone to the
beaches and to Mt. Hood several
times.
Would she like another year of
VISTA service with the Valley Mi­
grant League? Yes! In fact she has
signed up for a second year. Now
families are coming back for work
in the fields, and she looks forward
to tutoring again at the camps.
Kaye has now completed her
first full year of VISTA service. She
says she knew, from the start, that
she would stay with it throughout
the year, because that was what
she signed on the application. "It
was a kind o f pledge."
We wish
Kaye Dwiggins another good year
in VISTA, as successful as the first.
