Many friends came to paint, re model, move furniture, clean and help prepare the new center. Ken Glover, President of th e Poor People's Club, supervised the work. The Bonsers and Rayevichs from Gales Creek, the Davis' from Cor nelius, the Hernandez from Forest Grove, the Lopez and Trevinos from Hillsboro, and many, many others also helped. One man, Jose Mor ales fr o m Cornelius, began re modeling a g a r a g e which w ill someday be a playroom fo r child ren. The Valley Migrant League is one of OEO's projects in Oregon. This week President Johnson ask ed Sargent Shriver to give his full time to the war on poverty. Mr. Shriver has had two jobs. He was the head of both the Peace Corps and the anti-poverty program. U N IT E D S T A T E S New York City is back to normal. The great bus and subway strike has ended. The strike was 12 days long. The Transit Union agreed to a five day, 40 hour work week. The bus and subway drivers w ill be paid an average of $21.60 more a week. Los Angeles, California, w ill re ceive $4.5 million ddllars to retrain people who now have no work. This money w ill be given to Man power Development and Training Act, MDTA, to train people in such jobs as auto mechanics, clerk typ ists, hospital orderlies, nurses aides and welders. James Farmer has a new job. He is the director of a new anti-poverty program. The new program w ill teach reading and job skills. Mr. Farmer is a civil rights leader. He was a director of C.O.R.E. THE W O R LD Peace in Viet Nam still seems a long way off. The U.S. has talked peace with many world leaders. But peace seems no closer at pres ent. North Viet Nam calls the U.S. peace effort a "trick." They say the U.S. really wants to make the war bigger. The communists say the U.S. must get out of Viet Narfr be fore they w ill talk peace. The Defense Department has ask ed for 113,000 more men to join our nations fighting forces. The Christian Science Monitor newspaper reports that American farmers had a good year in 1965. Total farm income climbed from $13 to $14 billion. Farm assets now top $253 billion. Floods and landslides in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil have killed more than 400 people.
