Yes — Christmas w ill be celebrated today by 80 Russian families in the area around Woodburn. Their day to ob serve the birth of Christ is January 7. This is their tradition, just as it is alo the tradition of the Greek Orthodox church. They believe that Christ was born on this day. ¿Navidad en enero? SÍ — la Na vidad será celebrada hoy por 80 familias Rusas que viven el el area alrededor de Woodburn. El día en que ellos celebran el nacimiento de Cristo es el 7 de enero. Esta es su tradición así como tambie'n la tra dición de la Ig le s ia , Ortadoxo Griega. Ellos creen que Jesucristo nació’ este día. Para estas familias Rusas, sera' una celebración religiosa termi nando asi un ayuno de siete se manas. Durante este largo ayuno, la costumbre es que ninguna per sona mayor de tres años puede comer huevos, carne,o tomar leche. For these Russian families, it w ill be a religious celebration coming at the end of a seven week fast. " News of the world By Priscilla O R E G O N State Treasurer Robert Straub is the major Democratic candidate for the governorship of Oregon. He is expected to announce his candidacy this month. Tom McCall, Oregon's Secretary of State, has announced that he w ill enter the primary elections in May. He would like to be the Republican nominee for governor. Oregon's new Workman's Com pensation law came into effect on January first. The new law has been called 3-way because it allows employers to buy private insurance, state insurance, or provide self in surance. All employers must have one of these types of insurance; if not, they are subject to a heavy fine. In this week of wet weather, the Neighborhood Youth Corps helped prevent serious flood damage in the Johnson Creek area. This work force is made up of high school dropouts and youths from low in come families who live in Multno mah county. U N IT E D S T A T E S President Johnson has started a peace mission to end the war in Viet Nam. He has sent special rep resentatives to capitals, of nations all over the world. Vice President Hubert Humphrey talked with lead ers in Toyko, Manila, Korea and For mosa. Averell Harriman, ambas sador at large, visited Warsaw, Po land, Belgrade, Yugoslavia and New Delhi, India. Edward W. Brooke, a Negro of Carrasco Grape strike The strike by grape pickers in California's San Joaquin Valley has led to civil rights demonstrations in several major cities. The pickets marched outside the eastern offices of Schenley Industries, wine and liquor producers. Schenley is the second largest owner of vineyards in thé San Joaquin Valley. Three thousand pickers started the strike in September. It contin ued through the harvest season. The laborers are asking for a $1.40 an hour minimum wage and 20 cents for each box of grapes picked. They now make $1.25 an hour and 10 cents a box. Massachusetts, has announced that he w ill run for the l/. S. Senate. Mr. Brooke w ill run for the position left by retiring Sen. Leverett Saltonstall. Edward Brqoke is a Republican and now has the job of Attorney Gen eral of Massachusetts. THE W O R LD President Ayub Kahn of Pakistan w ill meet with Prime Minister Shastri of India. These leaders say that they are seeking peaceable means to settle their differences. They hope to sign a no-war pledge. The beautiful land of Kashmir has been a source of disagreement be tween Pakistan and India. At the beginning of 1965 there were 23,000 American soldiers in South Viet Nam. They were then called military advisors. Now there are more than 180,000 Americans in South Viet Nam. Unless peace is achieved by the end of 1966 the the total number of fighting men sent there w ill be doubled. .
