In f a c t , s o m e o f th e e a r l i e s t e f f o r t s t o e x t e n d o p p o r t u n i t i e s to w o m e n w e r e m a d e in th e f i e l d o f e d u c a t i o n . In 1 8 3 3 , O b e r l i n b e c a m e th e f i r s t c o l l e g e to o p e n i t s d o o r s to b o t h m e n a n d w o m e n . F o r e x a m p l e , in h e r " L e t t e r s o n th e E q u a l ity o f th e S e x e s " . . . S a r a h G r i m k e a r g u e d a g a i n s t b o th r e l i g i o u s d o g m a a n d t h e i n s t i t u t io n o f m a r r i a g e . T w o b r i e f e x a m p l e s a r e in d ic a tiv e : " . . .
