L ik e h i s t o r y s t u d e n t s w h o s t u d y th e h u m a n s a g a u s i n g w a r a s th e h i g h l i g h t , t h e d a t e l i n e , th e c l i m a x o f e a c h e r a — p e a c e s e e m s s o m e t i m e s in o u r d e s p a i r , l i k e n o t h in g m o r e t h a n t h e s e t u p f o r a n o th e r w a r. T h e y le a r n th a t c r i s e s a r e n o t m e r e ly th e r e s u l t of th e s e " f o r c e s , " b u t o f d e c i s i o n s p e o p le m a k e — i n c l u d in g t h e d e c i s i o n to s t a n d by p a s s iv e ly , e x p e c tin g an d e x p e rie n c in g th e w o r s t. B u t m o s t o f u s a r e s t i l l p a s s i v e . I t 's a l w a y s h a r d to t h in k a b o u t t h e u n t h i n k a b l e .
