i Record-Courier 9 THURSDAY, JUNE 23,2016 Baker County Livestock Producer’s Foundation Scholarship Applications Now Available Hells Canyon Junior Rodeo Applications are now available for the Baker County Livestock Producer’s Foundation Scholarship for the 2016 school year. Applicants must be residents of Baker County and currently attending or accepted for a second year or higher at an accredited college or vocational school. They must also be pursuing an agricultural-related course of study. Applications are available at the Baker County Extension Office at 260 East Street, Baker City. They are due no later than July 15th. The Baker County Livestock Producer’s Foundation encourages the pursuit of educational opportunities and emphasizes the importance of scholastic achievement. Donations from memorials and private donations make it possible to offer scholarships each year without using any of the * principal amount. One visit was to La Casa de Africa, showing items from over thirty African nations involved in a heavy slave trade in Cuba. We also made a visit to the Cigar Lounge where we learned about the history of cigars. We were given cigars but they crumbled in our luggage. (Guess they should have been smoked at the time!) Naturally, we made a visit to the Havana Club Museum of Rum. We went to a community project where Afro-Cuban art, music and culture were featured. We ended the day with a visit to the Christopher Columbus Cemetery. Lavish tombs of wealthy Cubans before the revolution were very interesting. Over 2 million individuals are buried in the one cemetery. One thing I thought unusual was that they take the bodies out after 40 years, burn the remains, and place them in a smaller box allowing room for more bodies! However, if the member has been wealthy or influential, those graves remain intact. The Cuban government is just starting to allow families to open their own restaurants. They are veiy proud of the fact that it is their privately-run home restaurant. Some were really off the beaten path and the bus had difficulty navigating the narrow streets. We made a visit to a day care for children ages 2-5 years old, most from single mothers and many teenagers. Again, we dropped off supplies as a part of our humanitarian visit. Approximately seven miles southeast of the center of Havana is the home of Ernest Hemingway, where he lived from 1942-1945. It is now a museum. It contains more than 22,000 original items, including record books, paintings, personal documents, books, etc. Outstanding rodeo talent was on display the entire weekend at the Hells Canyon Junior Rodeo Event / HCJ photo Lexie Harrell, Baker City, won the All Around Trophy Saddle and was impressive in doing so. She also won Junior Girls Breakaway competition, the Junior Girls Barrel Racing and Junior Girls Pole Bending. Those wins and what else she did in the rodeo gave her enough points to be the high point contestant among all the Juniors (boys and girls), so she won the High Point Junior Breast Collar as well. The fortress was used as a military base and prison for more than two hundred years. Che Gluevara made it his headquarters during the Cuban invasion. Our Cuban family would not enter as her fa ther was accused of being a spy and executed in the fortress. Williams qualified in barrel racing, pole bending, breakaway roping and ribbon roping. The event features 1,000 contestants from 43 states, Canada, and Australia - all vying for cash prizes and $100,000 in college scholarships. Good Luck, Michelle! He died in Bolivia in 1967 while leading that country's revolution. The mausoleum is a memorial that houses the remains of executed Marxist revolutionary Che and twenty-nine of his fellow combatants killed in Bolivia. I found the site where guerrilla forces commanded by Che am bushed Batista, by pushing tracks aside to derail the train. The original armored boxcars now have displays of photos, armaments and artifacts inside, and the bulldozer used to de rail the train is at the site. This was a setback to the Batista forces, who were moving men and much needed equipment across to the north. We did not have our luggage checked on either the Cuban or U.S. side. It was a wonderful trip with a lot of memories. Gerald Hopkins is retired as superintendent from Huntington School system, and also retired elementary School Principal from North Powder. His wife, Mary, who also traveled to Cuba, is a retired speech therapist from the Baker School District. Gerald remains active in local theatre productions, the Elgin Historical Society, and Lions Club. He and Mary have traveled to approximately 100 countries. “It keeps us busy”, says Gerald.
