The museum plays host to a number of wonderful wedding dresses that date back to the 18Q0s. The dress shown’here was worn by Sadie Velma Leep Sturgill. It dates back to 1888. If any of our readers has information about Sadie, or can forward to us a wedding photo, it would be greatly appreciated. The more we know about these dresses and the wonderful women who wore them, the more interesting the show. Blue Book TELEPHONE DIRECTORY An article written by Spencer Sunshine titled "Gunning for Of fice: Oregon’s Patriot Move ment and the May 2016 Primary," included Baker County and candidates, Kody Justus and John Hoopes, along with current County Commis sion Chairman, Bill Harvey as examples of Oregon's Patriot Movement who either are cur rently in office or running for of fice. The article is based on research from the Rural Organ izing Project and Political Re search Associates. Spencer writes, "In the wake of the armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in January and Febru ary 2016, a slew of candidates linked to the so-called Patriot movement are running for office in Oregon, including in the up coming May primary. These often- armed, Hard Right activists organized the initial demon stration that preceded the oc cupation and helped build political support for the occu piers’ demands. These de mands included the transfer of federally owned public lands to state or county governments in order to avoid land-use restric tions, as well as attempts to cir cumvent the federal government’s decision-making powers by invoking legally groundless claims about the authority of state and county governments." The article identifies candi dates within seven Oregon counties who are, according to the article, part of the patriot movement with strong affilia tions to Oath Keepers. Coun ties named include Yamhill, Douglas, Josephine, Crook, Grant, Harney and Baker County. Sunshine further writes, "The Patriot movement is a Hard Right movement that is trying to radically transform U.S. political and legal institu- tions.... The movement also re lies on a number of crank “legal” strategies that have no basis in law. The most impor tant is 'nullification...' One pop ular form of nullification is the false claim that county sheriffs have the authority to decide which laws are unconstitutional and therefore should not be en forced." "The movement also pro motes the concept of “coordi nation”: the...idea that federal agencies must comply with county government plans re garding land-use decisions, usually about natural resource extraction on federal lands that are within a county’s borders. Coordination is a new form of “county supremacy,” an idea popular in the 1990s that is re- emerging. By 1996, 70 coun ties had passed laws attempting to gain control over federal lands. "The most important Ore gon Patriot movement groups today are those associated with the Oath Keepers, the Three Percenters, the Consti tutional Sheriffs and Peace Of- ’ ficers Association (CSPOA), and the Pacific Patriots Net work. The Oath Keepers are a national membership-based or ganization that recruits current and former police, military, and first responders; however oth ers can still be “associate members.” Members swear to , disobey government orders they claim are unconstitu- * tionaL.the CSPOA is com-4 posed of standing law ’ enforcement members and is" affiliated with the Oath Keep ers. Their founder, formers* county sheriff Richard Mack,.4 believes the county sheriff has the authority tp interpret the ; Constitution, and therefore de- ; cide which laws should be ehCS forced. The Three Percenters, are a somewhat decentralized militia; individuals can identify with the label, but in some places, including Oregon, there ' are also organized groups with leadership structures. Some in* 4 dividual Three Percenters were / involved in the Malheur occu- . pation. The Pacific Patriots Network is a network of nine “partner” groups, mostly based . in Oregon and Idaho, including the Oath Keepers of Josephine County and both the Oregon and Idaho Three Percenters. Kody Justus who is running for County Commissioner Po sition #1, is Chairman of the Baker County Oath Keepers and has stated he "fully sup ports the Constitutional Sheriffs Movement for this County." He also demonstrated support for the occupation of the Wildlife ’ Refuge and delivered items to the refuge. In a video taped in terview with Jason (Joker J) Blomgren who was arrested on federal charges, Blomgren said,"... you donated a bunch of stuff. I mean, you don't have to go into details, but you, you gave us a lot of stuff." Justus reportedly also was ■ employed by the Bureau of . Land Management.in Vale for . about two years. Candidate for Baker County Sheriff, John Hoopes, is part of/ the Constitutional Sheriff's movement and a candidate op- ' posing Sheriff Travis Ash who was unanimously appointed by Commissioners Harvey, Kerns, and Bennett. Hoopes has been . out on disability for several ; months. Voters will make their. selection for sheriff in the gen- , eral election in November. Hoopes stated he visited the Malheur County Wildlife Refuge during its occupation when he spoke at the contro versial Rural Lives Matter Rally held in Halfway. Commission ers Harvey and Bennett also spoke at the rally. Harvey has advocated for the election of Justus and has spoken on Co ordination in Yamhill County and other locales.
