i Record-Courier Obitüß/iM/J\ltM,— — Gerald John Lequerica Mary Alice Williams Carroll June 1938 - Aug. 2015 Aug. 1926-Aug. 2015 * Mary Alice Williams Carroll, 88, ¿died on Aug. 6,2015 in Baker City. »She was bom on Aug. 17, 1926 in ■'Baker to John B. and Margaret William. Most of her early »childhood was spent in lumber camps around Bates, Austin ¿and Whitney. Her father worked for the Oregon Lumber ¿Company. The family lived year round in camp until her ¿brother John started to school. Then they came to Baker ¿where they lived on 15th Street. She and John went to ¿Churchill School through the 6th grade except for the 4th ¡grade when they went to school in a one room schoolhouse ¿.in Whitney. She remembers this year as the best time of all ¿her happy childhood. Her father came home every night and ¿they were all together. Probably the most important people Tin her life as a child were her brothers; John was 16 months ¿older than she and was the fount of all her knowledge. ¡■Berley was 21 years older and she adored him. When they ¿came to Baker from camp, he took her on his knee and they coagulated paint charts and she was allowed to choose the color he would paint the equator that week. She took this re sponsibility very seriously. The equator had to be painted often because "it is hot." • Mary went to Helen M. Stark Junior High School and grad uated from Baker High in 1944. On Feb. 17,1946 she mar ried her childhood friend George L. Carroll. They were married in the old Christian Church on the comer of 4th and Church Street. They spent most of their early married life in Baker. George worked as a meat cutter. They had three sons and a daughter. In 1954 George re-inlisted in the Navy and the family moved around quite a lot. George left the service in 1961 and they settled in Esparto, Calif., where they raised their family and lived for over 30 years. They returned home to Baker City in 1992. * Mary enjoyed doing needlepoint and many a home has her work hung on the wall. Funding Available to Oregon Ranchers for Sage Grouse Habitat Conservation Apply by Aug. 28 for this year’s funding USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service has financial and technical assistance now available to help Oregon ranchers improve sage grouse habitat in Baker, Crook, Deschutes, Grant, Harney, Lake, Malheur and Union counties. The funding will help landowners perform a variety of rangeland health conservation practices, such as removing invasive juniper trees and other conifers, treating exotic annual grasses, and addressing other threats to stabilize or improve rangeland ecological conditions. The funding is available to landowners interested in pursuing a Candidate Conservation Agreement with Assurances, or CCAA. CCAAs offer protection from future regulatory requirements should the greater sage grouse be listed under the Endangered Species Act. NRCS conservation programs give landowners the tools and financial assistance they need to success fully implement the conservation measures identified in their site-specific plans,” said Kevin Conroy, NRCS basin team leader. ‘Together, NRCS and its partners will work closely with private landowners to plan and design conservation treatments to improve sage grouse habitat and overall rangeland health.” Funding is limited to landowners within sage grouse habitat areas. Interested landowners should submit applica tions to their local USDA Service Center by Aug. 28 to be considered for this current round of funding. This funding is part of a new five-year project selected for funding this year though USDA’s highly- competitive Regional Conservation Partnership Program. Collectively, this project aims to improve sage grouse habitat across 3.4 million acres of privately-owned lands in Eastern Oregon. NRCS will invest $9 million in the project over the next five years, and partners are matching that invest ment dollar-to-dollar, for a total investment of $18 million. The lead partner for this project is the Oregon Association of Conservation Districts. Other collabo rating partners include: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; Bureau of Land Management; Oregon State Univer sity; USDA Agriculture Research Service; Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board; State of Oregon Governor’s Office; Oregon Department of Agriculture; The Nature Conservancy; Baker Valley Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD); Crook County SWCD; Ft.
