Haines 1901 ~ Haines, Baker County, Oregon Local Kids Place Well ? at YHEC Nationals Photos submitted by Tish Bloomer Three kids from Baker City including Gauge Bloomer, Braden Staebler-Slewell, and Ben Spaugh, competed as part of the Oregon team in the NRA's Youth Hunter Ed ucation Challenge (YHEC) National compe tition held in Raton, New Mexico at the NRA's Whittington Center the end of July. A qualifying event was held in Redmond, Ore., at the end of May. Buck Buckner was the Oregon coach. At the conclusion of the week long event, results were in. The junior team (of which Bloomer was a part) was second in the na tion in the archery event. Thè senior team (including Staebler-Siewell and Spaugh) was third in muzzleloader and responsibility exam and safety trail, second in .22 rifle and wildlife identification, first in orienteering, and overall second in the nation. "Some folks from Lousiana commented that the Oregon team is real 'salty.' I guess we are well cured because the kids have worked so hard practicing and studying," said Gauge Bloomer's mom, Tish, who is quite proud of the team's accomplishments. The money from the breakfast (and this year, the Gridiron), is used to purchase the animal from the FFA or 4-H member. The member gets a comparable price to the oth ers sold at Saturday's 4-H Livestock Auction. The "big money"-- in this case $15,250 (according to accountant Randy Guyer) which was raised at the Shrine Game, goes directly to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland to pay for necessary, life changing surgeries. Many local people have received wonderful services from the Portland hospital including Carrie Folkman who, along with her husband, owns Mt. View RV Park. Folkman emcees the annual Queen luncheon which was held at the Sunridge this year. Folk man was in a serious car accident when in high school and is the only person ever selected to be a Shrine Queen twice. She has been and continues to be an exceptionally strong advocate for Shriners and even had a letter published she had written to Ann Landers years ago speaking on behalf of the virtues of the organ ization and how much they help children. Local fans were thrilled the East team won Saturday's game, 25-0. All fans are thrilled about helping kids and the awareness and dollars raised by the East-West Shrine Game. a hot-off-the-grill pancake to a hungry customer.
