Wednesday, December 19, 2018 Church News Seventh-Day Adventist Sweet Peace Matthew 8:23-34 It was early in the morning after the killer storm of the night before. The sun was just coming up as their boat reached the other side of the lake. No sooner had they stepped on the beach when they saw a sight more terrible than the fury of the storm they had just been in. From some hiding place among the tombs two madmen rushed upon them like they were going to tear them to pieces. Hanging from them were parts of chains which they had broken when they had escaped from confinement. They had been torn and were bleeding from their self- inflicted wounds. Their eyes glazed out from their long matted hair. Their likeness to being humans had been blotted out by the demons that possessed them, and they looked more like wild animals then men. The disciples turned and fled in terror, but soon they noticed that Jesus was not with them. They turned to look for Him and found Him standing where they had left Him. He who had stilled the storm did not run from these demons. When the men, with gnashing teeth and foam at their mouths, approached Him, Jesus raised His hand to them and they could not come any closer. They stood raging but helpless before Him. With authority Jesus told the unclean spirits to come out of them. His words penetrated the darkened minds of the unfortunate men. They realized dimly that the One was here who could save them from the tormenting demons. They fell at Jesus’ feet to worship Him. When their lips opened to ask for His mercy the demons said instead, “what have we to do with You, Jesus You Son of God?” Jesus asked the demons, “what are your names?” The answer was, “it is legion for we are many.” Then the demons asked Jesus not to send them out of the country. They asked Jesus to send them into a big herd of pigs grazing on a nearby hill instead. Jesus agreed and instantly a panic came over the herd and they rushed madly over a cliff and into the sea and died. In the meantime a marvelous change came over the men at Jesus’ feet. Light had gone into their minds. Their eyes beamed with intelligence. The look on their faces that had for so long reflected the image of Satan disappeared. Their blood stained hands were still and with glad voices they praised God for their deliverance. Sweet peace had taken the place of terror. They were free! When these reformed men wanted to go with Jesus, He told them to go home and tell people what the Lord had done for them. They became the first missionaries to Gergesa. The very best way we can witness is to tell others what God has done for us. You can reach someone for Him that no one else can. Ask Him to help you. Community Bible Church For there is born to you…a Savior Luke 2:8 - 14 (NKJV)8Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:14 “Glory to God in the highest,And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” Oh for the day when there will be peace on earth. It’s hard for us even to imagine a world where peace is the main characteristic. Isaiah 9:6 speaks of a child who would be the Prince of Peace. It goes like this, “6For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given;and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be calledWonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Let me present to you one more verse from Mat- thew 1:23. God spoke to Joseph using a verse from Isaiah 7:14 when he was discouraged over finding Mary pregnant. 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,”which is translated, “God with us.” We know Him by the name of Jesus. While the world does not now know universal peace, you and I can know peace by coming to accept Jesus as our own personal Prince of Peace. May your Christmas be blessed with the presence of Jesus in your life. See you Sunday. We stereotype, blame, and act against all refugees, all poor people, all NRA members, all police officers, all Demo- crats, all Republicans. When we do that, we become just a bit more like the evildoers we’re fighting against. On the other hand, flight leads us to become silent and passive. We deny respon- sibility and declare it’s somebody else’s fault. When we do that, we’re standing dangerously close to the border of indifference. Either way, whether we choose fight or flight, nothing changes, least of all us. Recognition of our powerlessness is the middle ground between fight and flight. But that same powerlessness is our way forward because our powerlessness opens us up to a new and different source of empowerment. Instead of limiting our possibilities, our pow- erlessness now creates new possibilities with “the one who is more powerful.” Powerlessness doesn’t mean we have no choices. It means we have to make different choices. We may be powerless to change the world, but we can choose to change ourselves. We may be powerless to escape the world, but we can choose to live a different way. Isn’t that what John is telling those who come to him? He doesn’t ask them to change the world but to change themselves. He doesn’t tell them to quit their jobs but to live a different life. The crowds who came to him couldn’t eliminate poverty, but they could share what they have with the cold and hungry. The tax collectors who came to him couldn’t overhaul the tax code, but they could be honest. The soldiers who came to him couldn’t end the Roman occupation, but they could act with integrity and not abuse their power. In each of those situations John focuses on people and relationships. His answers are simple, concrete, practical. But for those who want to fix the whole world, John’s answers aren’t very satisfactory. Poverty still remains; unjust economic systems still exist; and power is still abused. But Jesus wasn’t focused on fixing the world at large either. Instead, he engaged and gave himself to the world as one person, in one relationship, one moment at a time. He loved the world to death and beyond. He showed us a different way of being; a different way of liv- ing and relating. He offered different priorities and values, and then invited us to participate and follow him. By doing that, he showed us what it means and looks like to be human; to be the dwelling place of God.
