Wednesday, August 8, 2018 Page A-3 Local fire updates as of press time Klondike Fire Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018 - The 30,873 acre Klondike Fire started July 15, 2018 by lightning. Fire managers are continuing to utilize available resources to suppress the Klondike Fire. Pacific Northwest Team 2 and Oregon State Fire Marshal are managing Taylor Creek Fire and Klondike Fire, effective 0600 today. Northern Rockies Incident Management Team 1 is managing the Natchez Fire. Evacuations: A Level 3 “Go” evacuation remains in effect for Oak Flat at the end of the Illinois River Road in Josephine County. Illinois River Road from mile post 2.5 to Oak Flat is at a Level 2 “Get Ready.” Visit Josephine County Emergency Management on Facebook for current information. Due to the Klondike wildfire, the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office has issued a Level 1 “BE READY” notice for the residences west of Hwy 199 between the intersection of Hwy 199 and Lakeshore Drive north to Waters Creek Road. This Level 1 notice also encompasses Hogue Drive, Norman Road, Illinois River Road, Squaw Mtn Road, Clear Creek Drive, Hidden Creek Road, Circle W Drive, Onion Mtn Road, Butcherknife Road, Slate Creek Road and all secondary roads connected with these road systems. The forest service signed a temporary emergency area closure for portions of the Forest including the Klondike Fire. An emergency road closure is also in effect for Forest Service roads 4103, 4105, 2512 and 2402-676. Low intensity burnout operations to continue along east side of the fire. Aerial ignitions between hand ignitions and main fire to reduce fire intensity. Aerial ignitions on the south side of fire to straighten fire edge and encourage low intensity backing fire. Engage spot fires when feasible and continue to construct indirect control line. Using Infrared flight data, ground, and air resources, monitor and report any new fire growth over the Illinois River and suppress if possible. Continue to hold and patrol east side as well as identify and implement indirect line. Monitor fire spread towards the Chetco Bar fire scar. Maintain structure protection in developed areas. Low intensity burnout operations will continue today with the objective of deepening the indirect line. Aerial ignition will augment hand ignition if weather allows to burn out fuels between the fire perimeter and the indirect line. Fire growth will generally be surface fire with single and group tree torching under heavy smoke through most of the day. If the inversion clears late afternoon or The G SPOT HUMP DAY KARAOKE w/ Jammer 8 - midnight early evening, then group torching, spotting, and short uphill runs are likely. Spotting to one-third mile; greater if smoke lifts and fire gets very active. Pacific Northwest Incident Management Team 2 took command of the fire Aug. 7, 2018, at 0600. A warming and drying pattern is expected through Thursday as a ridge of high pressure builds over the area with multiple days of hot temperatures expected. Smoke will continue to impact the fire area. Westerly and terrain driven winds will prevail across the fires Tuesday afternoon with winds continuing to shift northeasterly along ridges overnight. A low pressure system will increase winds Friday and provide cooler conditions with increasing relative humidity. Natchez Fire Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018 - The 10,859 acre Natchez Fire was started by lightning July 15, 2018. The fire is located just south of the Oregon/ California border between Happy Camp, Calif. and Cave Junction, Ore.. Management of the fire was transferred to Northern Rockies Team 1, a Type 1 Incident Management Effective 2:30 p.m. Aug. 1, Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office has issued an evacuation order for the two residences near the terminus of the South Fork Road (National Forest System Road 17 N 32). The residents received a warning July 31 and chose to evacuate. Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office has also issued an evacuation warning for all residences accessed by the South Fork Road (Road 17N32) and all residences accessed by the Grayback road north of the junction of the South Fork Road (Road 17 N 32) and the Grayback Road. This warning is being issued as a precautionary measure, the fire is still within the containment lines, but is progressing within close proximity to these residences. Fire area closures are in place on the Rogue River-Siskiyou and Klamath National Forests. Forest Road 48, known locally as the Grayback Road, between Happy Camp and Cave Junction, remains open at this time. Burnout operations in Divisions A and F continue as opportunity and conditions allow. Fireline prep along Grayback Road, and fireline construction on identified features on the southwest flank continues. Continue to identify other indirect lines opportunities. Burnout operations around Kelly Lake are still occurring. Hold and mop up north end of fire in Division S. Structure Group continues to assess structures in Indian Creek and create a structure protection plan. Low intensity burnout operations will continue today with the objective of deepening the indirect line.
