Wednesday, September 13, 2017 Church News Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Everyday Forgiveness In the 18th chapter of the Gospel of Mat- thew, Jesus talks directly to his followers to tell us what our fellowship should look like. If a brother or sister in the faith hurts you, angers you, saddens you, or does you wrong in any way, you go and talk to them about it directly, one on one. Not only does working things out this way lead to forgiveness, it does it in a grace- ful way. When I say graceful, I mean it in the way that it is full of God’s grace. The offended party isn’t dragging the offender through the mud. If it gets worked out here, no one else needs to know. Forgiveness is available without fear of embarrassment. It can be done quietly. Lov- ingly. Gracefully. But if that doesn’t work, then you bring another person or two with you. This ratchets things up a bit, but it still provides for grace with discretion. But if everything else fails, if things can’t be worked out, then you finally bring it to the whole church. A church can be totally undone by backbiting and whisper campaigns. When that happens, the church ceases to be a place of forgiveness, grace, and mercy. One might say that it really ceases to be a church. What happens too often in too many churches is this: If another member of the church sins against you, for instance, just talk about them behind their back. If another mem- ber of the church sins against you, just call a bunch of people in the church to complain about them. You may even want to start a let- ter-writing campaign against them. If another member of the church sins against you, just send them a nasty email. Copy the clergy. And, while you’re at it, CC the bishop. Or if another member of the church sins against you, don’t say anything. Just avoid them. Un-friend them on Facebook. And, if you can’t avoid them on Sundays, then just leave the church. Forgiveness is meant to be at the core of who we are. And if we can’t even manage that between ourselves in the church, how can we ever be agents of reconciliation in the world? Community Bible Church School Begins Again, Again, Again Ecclesiastes 3:1 To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education. ~Martin Luther King, Jr. Mr. Fattu was a history/geography teacher when I was in Junior High. Sometimes he would carry around a yard stick and whack the back of the hands of those not doing their work. He was tough and often grumpy, but he instilled in me a love of geography and history. At this point in my life, I can’t even tell you what he did to stir my interest, but whatever he did, it worked. My desire to know history shifted to my historical studies of the Bible, so I owe Mr. Fattu a great deal. There are many dedicated, faithful teachers in our public school system. They are dedicated to watching children grow intellectually and in developing their character also. My wife was one of those faithful teachers and taught 4th grade. We were recently installing LED lights in our class- room at Community Christian Academy after learning that there are studies that indicate that children learn better with that kind of light. As I talked with the sales person at the store, she related to me the story of a public school teacher who had changed the lights in her classroom to LEDs at their own ex- pense because they had heard about this. That kind of personal investment speaks to me. I have met dedicated moms and dads who home schooled their children, and the staff here at Community Chris- tian Academy is very dedicated to the intellectual and spiritual growth of those students entrusted to them. A child’s character is molded by those around them, and character is likely more important than intellect. Regardless of one’s school choice – the year is off and going! Just one more thought – don’t neglect your child’s spiritual growth. See you Sunday. Seventh-day Adventist Church The Rebellious Prince Absalom was the most handsome cun- ning, and ambitious of David’s sons. The Bible says, “There was not one to be praised as Absalom for his good looks, from the sole of his foot to the top of his head there was no blemish in him.” 2 Sam. 14:25. But this determined young prince wanted more than just the admiration of the people for his stun- ning appearance. He wanted the power of his father’s throne. He wanted to be king at any price! First he killed his older brother Amnon after he mistreated his sister Tamar. Then after he earned his way back into his father’s favor, he began to sow subtle doubts about David’s leadership, judgements, and laws until he stole the hearts of the people. 2 Sam. 15:6 Finally, his sinister plan erupted into a full-blown rebellion as Absalom tried to assas- sinate his own father, and take the kingdom. After a severe battle a few days later, David was once again secure on the throne, and hand- some Absalom was slain. A sad story for sure, but this was not the first royal family feud. In another great kingdom long ago, very similar events led to the most tragic rebellion of all time. The king- dom was heaven! What was the name of the rebellious prince in heaven, and why did he rebel? Isaiah 14:12 says “How are you fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning.” Isa- iah 14:13,14 “For you have said in your heart, I will be like the Most High.” Ezekiel 28:17 “Your heart was lifted up because of beauty, you have corupted your wisdom by reason of your brightness.” Did God make a devil when He created Lucifer? Ezekiel 28:15 “You were perfect in all your ways from the day you were created, till sin was found in you.” God made a perfect angel who, of his own free will, chose to be a devil. What finally happened? Rev. 12:7 “And there was war in heaven: Michael (another name for Jesus) and His angels fought against the dragon (Satan), and the dragon fought and his angels.” “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” Who does the devil hate most? Rev. 12:17 “And the dragon was angry with the woman (church) and went to make war with the last of her seed, which keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus.” What is the only way we can resist Satan? James 4:7,8 “Submit yourselves to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God , and He will draw near to You.” Places of Worship BRIDGEVIEW COMMUNITY CHURCH 5181 Holland Loop Rd., CJ 541-592-3923 “Come Join the Worship!” Sunday Worship 10:30 a.m. Pastor Sonny Moore www.bridgeviewcc.org * * * 7th DAY ADVENTIST 265 S. Matthew 4:10 “Then said Jesus unto him, Get thee hence Satan; for it is written. Ephesians 6:17 “The sword of the Spirit, word of God.” How will the fate of Satan be like Absalom’s? They both went into a pit. 2 Sam. 18:17 and Isaiah 14:15 Yet you (Satan) shall be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.” How does God feel about the destruction of the wicked? Ezekiel 33:11 “As I live says the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked.” Just imagine what it will be to live in a perfect place with our best friend Jesus and no enemy to tempt, accuse or trying to destoy us. May God keep us close to Him!
