Wednesday, June 21, 2017 Page A-3 Full slate of outdoor fun scheduled in the Valley Judy Hoyle IVN Contributing Writer The weekend starts Thursday nights at 6:30 p.m. for the next eight weeks as the popular Concerts in the Park returns to the Illinois Valley. Also the Selma Community and Education Center (SCEC) will be offering fun for the entire family with the return of their Drive-in Theater every Friday night through the end of September. Concerts in the Park are a free admission event, sponsored by the I.V. Chamber of Commerce at Jubilee Park in Cave Junction. The annual public benefit activity will feature returning favorites as well as new groups this year. First up June 22 is Bill Smaw a “one man band” who will play “acoustic rock and roll oldies, obscurities and vintage novelties” according to Menno Kraai, chamber president. On June 29, Rosie Wittman from Silas Wolf will play solo acoustic guitar. “Lonesome Road” will be the headliner July 6, performing their “stewgrass” mix of bluegrass, blues, rock and Americana. The new group Sqweasle will play July 13, offering Tery Davis and Nels Ivanson on guitar, Dane Saavedra on drums and “Mick the Mouse” on bass. Merlin Welcome adds flute and mandolin and all sing the group’s mix of pop tunes and original songs. July 20, Circle of Stone takes the stage with a danceable mix of Celtic and rock and Dale and Sharon Hopper will play classic country hits on July 27. Kelly Thibodeaux and Etouffee will perform Southern rock, rhythm and blues Art’s Red Garter Homestyle DINNER SPECIALS mixed with Cajun spice on Aug. 3 and then Fire Your Boss will round out the season Aug. 10 presenting “post-Apocalyptic folk core” according to band member Joseph Flaherty. Refreshments including nachos and hotdogs will be for sale at the I.V. Little League concession stand during every concert. The popular 50/50 drawing will take place weekly with proceeds dedicated to helping defray concert costs. Attendees are asked to bring their own seating. The public is invited to relax and cool down at the Selma Center’s Drive-in Theater starting 9:30 p.m. Friday evenings. The gate opens at 8:30 p.m., and admission is $5 per person or $20 per car. An area is kept open in front for those bringing their own seating and refreshments are available for sale. All proceeds and donations help fund SCEC, which is located at 18255 Redwood Highway in Selma. The season opened June 9 with “Austin Powers,” followed by one of the “Back to the Future” trilogy on June 16. This Friday’s feature is the original “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” starring Gene Wilder. The June 30 feature is “Rogue One, a Star Wars Story” starring Felicity Jones. July 7 offers David Bowie in “Labyrinth” and the ever-popular “The Goonies” will play July 14. A special “Kill Bill” double feature will run July 21 with Uma Thurman exacting revenge in both Volume 1 and Volume 2. Revenge of a different sort takes place July 28 with “Jurassic Park.” Aug. 4 features Johnny Depp in “Alice through the Looking Glass” and the beloved classic “Wizard of Oz” will run Aug. 11.
