Wednesday, April 19, 2017 Bill O’Reilly’s alleged escapades, hmmm: by Dr. Glenn Mollette Bill O’Reilly most likely can afford to retire and he probably should be thinking about it before he spends all of his life sav- ings on settling sexual harassment lawsuits. At least $13 million have been paid so far that we know about. O’Reilly has a deep financial well mak- ing close to $20 million dollars a year from hosting his number one rated nightly show plus about $30 a million a year in book sales making him the number one nonfiction author on the planet. Such a deep well makes him a very attractive target to those who have a barb against him. You most likely have heard the gory details from all the other television news chan- nels. You have heard about the alleged esca- pades of O’Reilly’s sexual advances toward women at the Fox network whose careers he might encourage or advance if they had sex with him. Of course, you haven’t heard much about it on Fox. They don’t have to talk much about it yet because all the other networks are covering the story intensely. So far Fox News has stood with him and has paid three of the settlements of the five women. O’Reilly has paid two settlements. One involved $9 mil- lion paid in 2004 to a producer, and the other was agreed on last year with a former on air personality. All of this comes after the Roger Ailes Fiasco, which led to his departure from Fox News and a $40 million departure package last year. Disturbing allegations were made by women personalities against Ailes that resulted in multi-million dollar settlements and Ailes’ demise. O’Reilly’s show for the last twenty years has been a lucrative cash cow for Fox earning the network hundreds of millions of dollars. Sponsors such as Mercedes Benz, BMW and dozens of others have filled the pockets of the network. However, by the last count, 21 of the sponsors have withdrawn from advertising on The O’Reilly Factor. “The allegations are dis- turbing and, given the importance of women in every aspect of our business, we don’t feel this is a good environment in which to advertise our products right now,” reported a representa- tive of Mercedes-Benz. It’s always hard to know exactly for sure what he said and she said and what he did and how she responded or vice versa. Even with audio recordings and videos there is a lot of room for tampering. A picture may tell a story but it doesn’t always tell the whole story. I haven’t heard of any pictures or videos that incriminate O’Reilly but there is always the possibility of something surfacing. The fact that O’Reilly and Fox have already settled for so much money with at least five different women in order to try to spare O’Reilly’s children and others from embarrass- ment and other suffering lends strong support there is a lot of fire behind all of this smoke. Also, the $13 million paid out isn’t saving anybody too much embarrassment it would seem to me. The big question that someone else will have to uncover the answer to, is how many unreported affairs and sexual escapades has Bill O’Reilly managed to have over the years? I’m not saying that he has. I’m saying if there is truth to the alleged harassment then there is always a chance there are women who will never talk because they don’t want to embar- rass their families or because they actually were enriched or promoted in their careers by having sex with O’Reilly or Ailes. This would be extremely embarrassing that their careers were actually advanced by their willingness to do anything - anything. Are there women with jobs at Fox who had sex with O’Reilly in order to ad- vance at the network? Did they have sex with Roger Ailes? Did they have sex with Ailes and O’Reilly? Who would dare to think we are only hearing from the alleged harassed people? There is always the possibility that O’Reilly and Ailes had numbers of successful trysts before and after and all around the other women who claimed foul. How many women have been on O’Reilly’s show or worked with him because they were willing to have sex with him in order to be there? There is also the possibility that all of the accusations have been made up for financial gain. Will anybody really know for sure? This is all conjecture and stuff that makes people go hmmm. Church News Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Consider Jesus I want you to consider Jesus. Just consider who He came here for, and how He treated them. Mark 2:16-17 tells us why Jesus came: “When the teach- ers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sin- ners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Jesus came to call the sinners. Jesus didn’t come for those who have it all together. Jesus came for people like you and me who needed help, who needed grace, and who needed mercy. Jesus came for those that conventional religion had rejected. When everyone else said, “We’re too good for them. They’re not clean enough, not righteous enough, not holy enough,” Jesus said, “That’s exactly who I came for.” Jesus loved the unlovable; those that everyone else despised. He welcomed those that other people turned away. Jesus didn’t come for those who are perfect. So, if you’re already perfect, just keep on shining your halos, but recognize that Jesus came for people that didn’t have any halos at all. The second thing to consider is the resurrection of Jesus. Why does the resurrection matter? As he hung on the cross, he was jeered at and spit upon. Yet he still said, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do. He offered grace and forgiveness, even while hanging on a cross. But when they put him in that cold, dark tomb, just as Jesus had predicted, three days later, the women went to the tomb and found the stone was rolled away. He wasn’t there. HE…WASN”T…THERE. Peter who had denied Jesus just three days ago when he was asked “Do you know Him?” was completely transformed and began to preach tirelessly on the resurrection. Why? Be- cause the tomb was empty. In Acts 3:15, Peter said to the religious leaders: “You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead.” And then, he said - and this is the key - “We are witnesses of this.” They witnessed it. They saw Him. That’s why these men were willing to give their lives for the same Jesus that they were denying days earlier. It was because they saw the power of the resurrection. It all hinges on the resurrection. Because Jesus died on the cross and was raised from the dead, we are made right with God. It doesn’t matter how many times we’ve sinned, we’re made right with God because Jesus was perfect, and He took on the penalty, and paid the price for our sins. So, consider Jesus. Consider who he is. Consider what he did when he gave his life just for you. He is Risen! And he is risen for you! Seventh-day Adventist Church Depression and the frontal lobe of our brain To better appreciate the frontal lobe of the brain, let’s consider the case of Philip. He lost the function of his frontal lobe as the re- sult of a serious brain injury. He survived and had a remarkable recovery from this major trauma. He looked the same and talked the same, but he was a different person. Before his accident Philip was a well loved and re- sponsible husband. He was hard working and intelligent. He was known for his high mor- als and a good record as a railroad foreman. However after the accident, Philip’s moral decline was evident immediately. He became overly emotional and was prone to outbursts of anger. He lost interest in spiritual things, became irreverent, and used profanity constantly. He went from a prized employee to unemployment. Philip’s trau- matic frontal lobotomy cost him his personal- ity, his moral standards, and his commitment to family, church and loved ones. What does the frontal lobe of our brain have to do with depression? Studies show that a depressed person has a significant decrease in the frontal lobe’s blood flow and activity. This happens most in the prefrontal cortex of the brain. This part of the brain is the control center of the brain and controls behavior planning, decision making, emo- tional control, self-awareness and self-inde- pendence. Additional involvement of the dorso- lateral prefrontal cortex of our brain is working memory, selective attention, verbal fluency and recall. How can we improve frontal lobe health? Here are some harmful things to avoid. Street drugs impair the frontal lobe, even though the user’s appearance may not show it. Alcohol injures the front lobe. It is one of America’s most popular frontal lobe assailants. It reduces frontal lobe activity. It weakens abstract thinking ability even in social drinkers. There are serious concerns in the psychiatric literature about caffeine’s role in “unbalancing” the mind. Caffeine has been linked with anxiety, psychosis (state where a person loses touch with reality). An international acclaimed Norwegian research project known as the Tromso Heart Study assessed 143,000 men and women and found a significant increase in depression among women who were heavy coffee users. These are certainly things to be considered for our health sake… to be continued.
