I hope we don’t have millions of people without health care in the next year or so. However, in reality we already do. A 50-year-old woman told my wife and I that she seriously needs a knee replacement but she can’t pay her deductible and 20 percent. Together they would be several $1,000 and on her waitress salary she can’t afford the surgery. She has medical care but she can’t afford to have a very needed surgery. If she falls over with a heart attack and is rushed to the hospital then her insurance will of course pick up a major part of her treatment but she will still be stuck with a big medical bill. That would be another crisis. I wonder if her heart would be able to withstand the shock of her medical bill? The answer to medical care in America is to put everyone 65 and over on Medicare. We pay for it so we should receive it when the time comes. Make Medicare pay for everything and get rid of the supplemental insurance. We pay into Medicare all of our lives and then have to worry about supplemental insurance at 65. Congress should eliminate that hassle. Medicare should cover everyone over 65. Many will go throughout life and pay very little if any into it. Obviously our country has major debt. There- fore, we should take some of our foreign aid to cover any who might be left out. The very poor in America should be on Medicaid. Doctors and hospitals must be required to accept Medicaid patients. I realize they have to make money but a 10 to 15 percent load of Medicaid patients is not asking too much for a doctor. People with preexisting conditions should be able to buy into Medicare. Allow working Americans to buy medical insurance across state lines so we can shop for affordable insurance that fits our budgets. Open up pharmacies in Canada so we can shop for cheaper medicines. Find a cure for cancer. Give Americans a serious tax break if they keep their body mass index at 26 or below. There is a further question as to whether we should keep poor senior Americans on Medicaid or as I previously said move them into Medicare as well. If Medicaid covers all medical treatment then it won’t matter. However, if Medicaid is not accepted by all of the medical society then we still have major issues. Funding Medicaid and Medicare is the major part of this battle. It’s time we start using Casino taxes, marijuana taxes, cigarette taxes, alcohol taxes, fast food taxes, obesity taxes and soft drink tax money to fund Medicare and Med- icaid. We could raise a lot of money and prob- ably eliminate having two different systems thus going to one system, which would be a national medical card for those over 65, those with preex- isting conditions and the very poor. Finally, make Congress shop and buy their healthcare. Limit Congress to five terms and senators to two terms. Eliminate insider stock trading information, which is illegal for average Americans yet Congress racks up millions over the course of their tenures. Many of our problems would be solved if Congress had to live like average Americans. Another problem would be solved if insurance company and drug manufac- turing company lobbyists are barred from Capital Hill. Congress should be barred from receiving money in any way, shape or form from these peo- ple. Maybe then they might make some decisions for the American people instead of what is in the best interests of their financial supporters. The remarks and references are mostly taken from David Jeremiah’s book “Is This the End?” which we are using as a Bible Study at Community Bible Church. “A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candi- dates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. Dur- ing those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependency, and from dependence back to bondage.” Almost two hundred years ago, Scottish professor Alexander Fraser Tytler wrote the above words about the Athe- nian Republic, which had fallen more than two thousand years earlier. Dr. Jeremiah’s thoughts were directed toward the future of the United States. He titled this chapter “The Apathy of America,” There are times I wonder about the future of the USA myself. So divided, so ill at rest – where will it lead? We have been so blessed as a nation and met with so much success, but what have we done with these gifts? In a letter dated March 11, 1792, George Washington, our first president, wrote the following: “I am sure there never was a people, who had more reason to acknowledge a divine interposition in their affairs than those of the United States; and I should be pained to believe, that they have forgotten that agency, which was so often manifested during our revolution, or that they failed to consider the omnipotence of that God, who is alone able to protect them.” (From the writings of Washing- ton, Vol. XVIII, p. 452) It would be wise for us all to consider who the author of our liberty is. We got a package of inspi- rational books in the mail. It was from 3 ABN TV station. We had sometimes ordered books from them and thinking this was another package we had ordered I opened it. Much to my surprise there were about 20 books written by Shelley Quinn. When I called the TV station to let them know that even though the package was addressed to us, we had not ordered it. What shall I do with them? How delighted I was when they said we could keep the books! It occurred to me that maybe there was a reason that these inspirational books came to us. Maybe the Lord wants us to draw nearer to Him through the messages in these books. Naturally we share these gift books with our friends. In fact we have been study- ing them at prayer meeting. This book has been a real blessing to me. It is called “Pressing in to His Pres- ence.” The third chapter was about pressing in with praise. Scripture says God inhabits the praises of His People. Psalm 22:3 In this book Quinn is sharing a kind of prayer that has brought her prayer life alive. The first part of the prayer is praise, then repentance, then affirmations, interces- sion and supplication and finally enter and be still listening. For a real blessing try this new kind of prayer. The second title of books in the gift box we received is another of Shelly’s books called “The Grace Pipeline.” The practical effects of God’s gift of grace and its impact on us. Valley Evangelical Free Church Consequence This past week I was given a printout from an organiza- tion called AreaVibes. It gives the livability score for Cave Junction (and any city) based on various criteria. According to them, Cave Junction gets an “A” for amenities and an “A” for our low crime rate!?? We rate better than Grants Pass in our combined score! I believe that score comes from the consequences of our current lack of law enforcement in the area. Criminals do whatever they want without fear of consequence. And because there is no consequence, there is a resulting lack of reporting the crimes that do occur. We have the attitude, “Why waste my time, nothing will come of it anyway unless it is a raise in my insurance rates.” Many people have the same attitude when it comes to their relationship with God. They live their lives as if there is no consequence for their actions. They say, “How does God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High?” Psalm 73:11 (New King James Version) What they fail to realize is “it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.” Hebrews 9:27 There is con- sequence and we only have this life to get things right with God by faith in Jesus as our Savior. “Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. He is the one who can bring peace into a life filled with turmoil. He is the one who meets our deepest needs. He is the one who can help us through our daily struggles and addictions. “Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.
