Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, Ore. Wednesday, December 21, 2016 Page A-3 Sports Cougars play well at home Ray Brown IVN Contributing Writer If you’ve wondered where your couple of bucks go when you donate to the local youth when they bag groceries at Shop Smart - well, they were at Ken Mann Memorial Gym Tuesday night. You could smell the popcorn; hear the band play music such as “Wayward Son,” “Iron Man and “Seven Nation Army”; and see cheerleaders in step. Of course, the main attraction was a well-drilled energetic basketball team. Coach Matthew Knight’s Cougars came out with a lot of energy, with Skylar McLanahan leading the way with 12 points in the first quarter, making it 17-8 Cougars at the end of the period. After a little slower pace in the second quarter, the Cougars led at halftime 24-19. The third quarter found the home team hitting more of their shots again for a score of 38-23. New Hope was able to get within 10 points in the fourth, but the Cougars stayed even in the scoring, partly due to good free throw shooting, winning the game with a final score of 49-38. McLanahan led scoring with 15, Caleb Hess with 12, Tyi Brummett and Cody Box with four a piece, Isaiah McLanahan three, and Chase Nelson and Bryce with two each. The boys are scheduled to host Pleasant Hill Tuesday, Dec. 20 and La Pine Wednesday, Dec. 21. They then travel to Eagle Point Thursday, Dec. 22. Coach Knight, “Our game [Thursday] at Prospect went very well. We ended up winning 45-33. We are continuing to grow as a team and get better and better with each game that we play. Our leading scorers against Prospect were Skylar McLanahan with 21 points and Tanner Davis with 11 points. Tanner also added seven rebounds and Skylar had four rebounds and two 3-pointers. We have three games coming up this next week against Pleasant Hill, La Pine and Eagle Point. We will be home for the first two games Tuesday and Wednesday. These games will be good tests for our team.” Lady Cougars building steam Ray Brown IVN Contributing Writer The Lady Cougars played an intense game at home against New Hope Christian with Aarika Brooks getting the opening tip and becoming more of a presence underneath: With spark plug Aundrea Miller getting two fouls early, the rest of the team would have to turn it up a notch, ending the first period ahead at 10-8. The scoring was spread around in the second quarter with Courtney Scott leading the way. New Hope got within one point with five minutes to go in the half, but the Cougars ended the half with a 29-19 lead. The third quarter scoring was quieter for the home team, ending at 36-33. The game heated up in the final period with New Hope leading by one with four minutes left on the clock, but 40 second later, the cougars would retake the lead for good. The final score was 50-41. Miller had an all-around great game with 15 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and seven assists; Brooks had a double double with 10 points and 14 rebounds; Scott had nine points, eight rebounds and three assists; Tori Johnson had eight points and 13 rebounds; and Roza Jonas had six pts and 8 rebounds. Coach Serena Barry said after the game, “We had a strong first half, going into halftime with a 10 point lead. We had a letdown in the third quarter and they closed the gap, but we were able to keep the lead and finish it out in the fourth quarter with an ending score of 50-41.” The Lady Cougars traveled to Prospect Charter two days later and took that game - 47- 31. Tori Johnson had 22 points and Diamond Murphy scored nine. Coach Barry said, “We host Pleasant Hill on Tuesday and La Pine on Wednesday. We are at Eagle Point on Thursday. Tuesday the 27th we are hosting our third annual I.V. Alumni Holiday Games with a girls volleyball alumni game at 4 p.m. and a boys basketball alumni game at 5:30.” The Archive Zone: by Hillary Mohr from the Illinois Valley News archives ‘Tis the season to be jolly December 20, 1990 . Twas nearly a week before Christmas and all through the Valley not a snowflake had fallen and holiday décor votes had just finished being tallied. Children wrote their letters to Santa, and this one I especially adore: “Dear Santa, I would like to see you Mis. Claus and the elves. How are the reindeers and I hope you get around the world in one day. Say hi to Rudolph the reindeer. If you can please give a gift to the poor. – Love Hillary Mohr (Selma School Third Grade).” Jump in your one-horse sleigh and get ready to go dashing through the Archive Zone. I.V. holiday décor cited. Following are winners in the Illinois Valley Chamber of Art’s Red Garter Pool Tourney Tuesdays @ 6:30 Commerce annual holiday decorating contest. Indoor: First place goes to the Red Garter Restaurant. If you haven’t seen their display, stop by. Be sure to see Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the huge white teddy bear, all the letters to Santa, and the colorful lights. A lot of effort and beautiful job. Second place: Tortilla Junction. Check out the animals on the “littlest” tree and the silver garlands. Third place: Western Bank. Everything looks very nice. Outdoor: What a difficult job. Did you see what we had to decide between? After looking at four entries and hours and hours of deliberation the first- place winner is Carousel Fabrics. Love all the stars, and you can’t miss their beautiful display of white lights. Second place: O’Brien Country Store. Nice job, love the “caboose” and Mr. and Mrs. Santa Clause. It makes the entrance to O’Brien look great. Men held in Takilma shooting. Two men have been arrested in connection with a shooting and kidnapping incident in Takilma last week. Neil G. Hines, 38, of 9713 Takilma Road, was arrested late last week on charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and first-degree assault following an incident in Takilma Wednesday evening, Dec. 12, according to the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office. Saturday, Dec. 15, deputies arrested Richard P. White, 36, also of 9713 Takilma Road. He was charged with attempted murder; two charges of first degree kidnapping’ and being an ex-convict in possession of a firearm. Numerous Illinois Valley deputies and AC Valley Ambulance responded to the community at around 7:50 p.m. the 12th after reports of several gunshots and several injured people. Initial information was sketchy as to specific locations and those involved. Deputies contacted a woman, Betty Jo Kendrick, of 9957 Takilma Road, at the Takilma People’s Clinic. She suffered a shotgun wound in her upper right thigh, the sheriff’s office said. She was taken to a hospital for treatment. Another woman, identified as Jane Doe, was contacted at the site of the former Takilma Store. She was hysterical, possibly under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and may have witnessed the shooting. She became violent and caused injuries to Deputy Dave Raymond by her kicking and swinging. Hines was taken into custody the evening of the incident, then released. He was arrested later in the week on attempted murder and other charges after more investigation. Investigation shows that Hines and another person went to the incident location because the man, who lives there, told Hines people in his residence were threatening harm to his live-in girlfriend. Hines and two men, the sheriff’s office said, went to the residence and that’s when gunshots were fired.
